Springfield 1911-A1 GI .45
« on: October 14, 2006, 03:48:03 PM »
Well I bought one of these.  I've been wanting a 1911 for a LONG time and was hoping for one with adjustable sights but, just couldn't pass this one up.  It's soooo cool looking, http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-pstl-1911-GI.shtml.  I can't wait to get it on the range.  Who else here has a Springfield 1911?

Very cool. Looks like the real deal. I have Springfield V-16 longslide stainless. I use it for backup while deer hunting, home defense and action pistol competition. I also have a Springfield M1A. My Springfields are totally reliable and accurate. I am sure you will be very happy with your new handgun.

I have a 1992 mfd (ser.# NM123XXX) SA 1911-A1 that looks EXACTLY like the current USGI, except the hammer is in the white and the cocking serrations on the slide are slanted. NO...it's NOT a Mil-Spec. I wouldn't take anything for it.... ;D

I have a 1911-A1 Springer that I purchased in 1991 and have been shooting it for the past 15 years.  Lately I have been fooling around with different powder charges under a 230 gn FMJ-SWC by Magtech and some of those loads are really grouping very well.  Nice thing about that FMJ-SWC is that it cuts a nice square hole.  Mikey.

I have a Mil-Spec. It doesn't spend much time in the safe. I bet your GI won't either.

I have two, the full size and the Champion. Like them both and have had no problems with either. Bought some cheap mil-surp mags and they work 100% in both. Shoot the Champion more because I really like the shorter barrel. I polished the ramps on both of mine and have not had any failures with ball or hollow points. You will be happy with it.

I have a the Springfield 1911 - A1. I shoot Bowling pins with it at 20 yds using those FMJ 230gr bullets. I feel its good practice. Always reseting those pins.

RicMic:

It is indeed cool! I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's just made from the ground up to shoot 230 grain ball ammo.

I have the mil spec also. I always liked the looks of a 45, but was really surprised at how comfortable it is to shoot. I thought it would be the opposite with the narrow grip frame. Now I'm saving to get something with more beels and whistles. I found out right away why people become addicted to 45s.

I got one too. It's great. Had some problems with the extractor causing some major jams about every 60 rds. Changed the extractor and no malfunctions.

Put the old extactor back in and let my Niece use it for practice. Good drill for a young Cop.

I did have some trigger work done but for US$399.00 out the door..............

Bought 5 more SA magazines so we can do mag switch work and they all function perfect.

John Browning designed the gun for 230 gr FMJ so that's what I shoot.

Tried Russian Ball, Magtech and some of the US brands, it all works.

GREAT GUN for those that want a GI model.

Bill

Now that I've had a chance to shoot it a couple of things really came to light.  First off I couldn't believe the fit and finish, the slide cycles like it's on a stick of butter.  Second I had a Colt 1911-A1 about 23 years ago and it would group around 4 to 5 inches at 25 yards the Springer shoots about 3 inch size goups at 25 yards.  The only ammo I have used thus far is 230 grain ball made by Independence out of Lewiston, Idaho.  No malfunctions of any kind and at $11.59 a box of 50 you just can't go wrong.  I'll start loading my own after a few more boxes of this stuff.  Anybody got a favorite 230 grain ball recipe you care to share?  Come to think of it I have some Power Pistol on hand, hhhmmm.......

I have a custom stainless that I picked up used that had some work done to it.
I love it..
I had a colt last year and the springfield is better
very accurate and 100% reliable

btw, you can put in adjustable rear sight cheap and easy
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=721189

I put one in mine and it's a first class sight
I also put a Dawson precision fiber front sight on it.. outside it's like a laser beam :)

I had a look at that rear sight but, my front sight is too low and to make matters worse it's part of the slide.  I'll have to check with ye ol' gunsmith about the costs of cutting a dovetail in the slide.  Lowering and flaring the ejection port.  Fitting the front and rear sights.  Heck - may as well get another gun!
