Handgun Buck

My son in law took this buck with his 357 GP 100 using 125 grain Remington hollowpoints.

Shame on him for hunting with such a puny little caliber! ;D

Tell him, from a die hard 357 magnum hunter, that I said congratulations on taking one beautiful buck with that revolver. Tell him also though that lady luck was with him on that 125g HP. Tell him to sight that gun in with some good stout 158g SP's and he'll have an honest to goodness deer combination that'll never let him down if he keeps on making good shots. :)

redhawk'

nice buck!  ;)   tell him, " congratulations!"

i do agree, however, with the use of the heavier softpoint being recommended for more consistent killing power with whitetails.

good hunting,

Thanks, I will print this for him.
We discussed bullet weights in great detail before the hunt. I usually cast our hunting bullets but this year we went with factory loads. When we set up for a handgun hunt we pick prime areas in heavy brush where the deer will have to pass within 50 yds or less of our blind. Our hunting area is next to Crane Naval  Weapons Depot so we must drop the deer before it jumps the fence onto government property. We felt the 125 JHP placed in the lungs would do this faster than a heavier bullet with more penetration but less expansion.
The buck passed within 20 yds and even though the bullet hit farther back than he wished the buck dropped in less than 25 yds. The damage had to be seen to be believed.
He is a remarkable shot with this pistol. Here is a pic showing a few of the many squirrels he has taken with the GP 100. I cast a 120 grain TFN 9mm bullet and push it with 3 grains of Bullseye in a 38 special case for squirrel hunting. This is a super accurate load that gives about 750 FPS and is lethal on tree rats.

Thanks for all of the nice replies. Does anyone blackpowder pistol hunt? Here is the deer he took last year with his Traditions BP pistol.

Congrats!  I find nothing wrong with the use of the 125 HP (the Remington is a good one) in the .357 for hunting deer.  Having dispatched quite a few deer as a LEO in NE Oregon I found in the .357 the faster stepping 125 HP/SPs killed quicker than the 150/158 gr bullets and certainly quicker than with hard cast SWCs.  Most all were heart/lung shots, all killed but the 125s killed quicker.

It is always good to hear from someone who has been there done that. Thanks
We found the heavier hollowpoints often just pencil through the deer and make for a nasty tracking job. Deer ribs don't offer a lot of resistance to open up a hollowpoint or SP especially out of a 4" barrel.  If we set up for a close shot and hit the lung area with the 125 HP the deer will be dead usually within 50 yds. We practice a lot and are very picky about the angle when placing the bullet. I normally use my 45 LC Blackhawk with a blunt 255 SWC doing about 1250 FPS.
Here is a squirrel I took with it.
