What is this strange thing on my new rifle?

Hi Donaldo.
Long time no hear. I am getting my Viper 6ppc fired up for a couple of group matches next month. Our outfit can't get their act together for a couple of HBR matches or even or even for a Sporter class score match.

Only  Light and heavy varmint class for group. Got a nice 30BR barrel for score shooting but no score matches. Your 6BR will be hard to get into the ones. I guess you heard about my 6x47(222Rem Mag case) Handi been wasting some gophers with it.

Drop in again, we need some controversial subjects lest wee go asleep with the broken record. :D  :-D

Fred,
How do you like the Viper action?  Did you get the drop port or the plain jane model.  I watched a guy shooting a drop port in a match.  Boy does that thing work fine.  I can't seem to decide whether to get the Viper or a Hall action.  Both nice and about the same price.  Do you know anything about the Hall actions?  Your probably right about not being able to get the Savage/6BR down into the 0.1's.  However the other day I had 4 shots in 0.072.  I could see it was a mighty small group thru my 36x scope.  Got a bit excited and actually jerked the trigger on the 5th shot.  Well my .072 went to a .4xx.  I have been shooting over wind flags for several months now.  Trying to lean how to read the wind.  Lots to learn about reading the wind, not to mention the mirage.........Don, Donaldo

Donaldo.
The Viper is a fine action, don't know about the Hall.
The drop port works well, also mine is a standard RB-LP(right bolt left port) and I am not suffering from lack of speed. I also have a Kelbly Kodiak nearly identical except for the 308 boltface and a recoil lug, also in RB-LP HBR 10# 6x scope..

The Viper is a good deal, it comes with rings and excelent anodyzing. My choice.

Yes you right about wind flags, I use three of them, our range is in a wind zone in the Rocky Mountain foot hills, it is a real chore to shoot a good score or group. Blaze down 5 shots as fast as you can and hope you can stay out of a gust.

Fred,
Our range is in a small canyon next to a lake.  In fact, when the lake if full, your are shooting over water on the 200 and 300 benches.  We always have wind from two directions.  Seldom have I seen it when the wind was from the same direction on all 4 of my flags.  Only when we have a north wind off the lake does it have all flags going the same.  Some of my best groups were shot under those conditions.  My 6BR has a 12 twist and seems to like 80 grain Bergers really well with a healthy load of Varget.  When I shoot the 66 grain bullets, I use N135 and H4895.  The N135 is a bit better shooting.  My 27" pacnor barrel has two nodes with the 66's.  One is at 31.5 (3340 fps).  The other is 33.0 and have not chronoed them.  Went to the range with a bunch loaded up with 33.0, took the chrono to see what the vel. was.  Battery was dead on the chrono.   I had 25 rounds loaded 33.0/66 and 10 rounds 33.0/65 Berger BT.  My 66's are Made by Ronnie Cheek.  Plan was to shoot 5 groups of 5 shoots to see what the agg would be.  Shot 2 foulers (65) and then the first group with the 66's was 0.108.......Hot Dog. Next group was in the .4xx's.  Anyway the agg on 5 targets was a bit over 0.350.  Good enough for last place at 100 or mid pack at 200.  I was at 100 of course.  Ended up shooting the last 5 rounds I had (65's) at a seperate target.  Damn.....first 4 went into a bug hole.  I think those 4 would have been close to .100 flat.  But wind had picked up a bit and was trying to read the wind and let the last shot get out, still had a mid 0.2.  I really think this rifle would shoot better with a shorter barrel.  It now has close to 900 rounds thru it.  I am thinking about sending it back to pacnor and have them shorten it to 24".  It is a straight no taper tube.  Chris said he would charge me $100 to shorten it and recut a new chamber.  By the way...did you ever read the article about the Houston Warehouse shooting that went on back in the late 70's, early 80's?  If not do a google search for Houston Warehouse.  Very interesting reading.  I run off a hard copy just so I can re read it now and then.  Gotta go now...Don

Don.
The general rule of throat wear is about one thou per hundred rounds.
900 round is not enough wear to rechamber, but that depends how fuzzy you are. I shoot only Moly plated bullets and wear is less.

Besides around here getting any precision barrel work done is an exerize of futility. Never mind getting a good barrel.

If you get four in a bug hole, there is no reason at all not to get the fifth one in the same hole. I did the same thing yesterday. It is a well known incident. But you know all it does it ruins your day.

My 6ppc is 21.5", the HBR 25Hunter is 22.75" and the 30BR is 22.5. Who knows what the right length is. Ringing the barrel to determen the right length is what Bill Calfy does.

Yes I read all about the Houston warehouse. A 100yard tunnel with a heated shooting house would also do, two benches, build in Chrono. powered target retriever, air handling unit and excaust, and loading benches and tools, sound baffles, kitchenette, toilet.

You could even have a bed to sleep on the job. And of course a precison lathe to do barrel work right on the spot.

I gues we better not take up to much forum space with non Handi subjects. Some folks may get browned off?

:)  I hear ya Fred, seems that there could have been a better way of doing this. Like tightening up tolerances in the manufacturing of the lugs and frames. It all falls back on lack of QC. I guess we could put a band-aid over it so nobody has to look at it!   :)

It's a lack of process capability that requires the hand fitting.  If it makes the hand fitting process easier, then I say it's (the view port) a good thing.  Now they need to figure out how to improve their machining process so that drop in barrels will work without hand fitting.  Then they can eliminate the cost of locating and machining in the view port.  It's a doable thing, but the cost of the frames and the cost of the barrels might be a little more due to the costs of improving the manufacturing process.

My new .204 has this extra pin in it. I think it makes the receiver look 'distinguished', kinda like a lever action.  NEF is owned by Marlin and look at all the screw holes in one of their lever actions.I think they like drilling holes. Anyway I too am glad that they have done something about latch engagement even if it lacks sophistication.
