H&R Shikari ???
« on: November 22, 2006, 11:46:13 AM »
Howdy all...
I'm new to the forum and haven't had any experience with the Handi.  I am trying to get rid of the heavy Savage Tactical I have for a more realistic weight of hunting gun.  I am looking at a H&R Shikari in 45-70.  Do these models have the ability to interchange barrels like the Handi model does?  Are the stocks the same and can the sights be replaced with the Buffalo Classic ones?  The closest I hae come to the Handi Rifle was an old H&R Topper 12 ga.   Sure let ya know when it fired but still works after 40 years!                                                  Thanks!    Jeff

Thanks for the nod Marv!  The Shikari was supposedly made from 1972 to 1982 if that helps anyone figure this out!

Welcome to GBO! Although I don't have a Shikari, from all that's been posted here, they are great rifles and have excellent ballard cut rifling, the frame is not of the same strength as current production rifles, so you would be limited to trapdoor .45-70 levels, H&R won't fit a barrel to any frame made before 1987, I don't know if the current barrels will even fit that frame, someone with one of em will have to answer that question for ya. If they do,  it would have to be a low pressure caliber, seems to me they were originally offered in Muzzleloader, 44mag, 22 Hornet, .357Mag, and of course shotgun gun combos, but don't quote me on that. ???

Hope this helps a little,

Tim

Thanks Tim...If I recall the Handi's are made in 2 frame types?  One for larger calibers and one for smaller?  What calibers can I get if I get a Handi in 45-70?
Also just wanted to say that I have only seen this type of helpfulness and comraderie in black powder forums and that in itself is enough to make me want a Handi!   Thanks!

Current production frames are SB1 which are on rimfires(actually an SS1 due to firing pin location), shotgun and muzzleloaders, and SB2 frames on all the rifle and pistol calibers. There's also an SB2 10ga frame that is bigger in dimensions that is used on the 10gauge shotguns and the 12ga slug guns. The SB2 rifle frames are strong enough to handle all standard calibers but no magnum rifle calibers. Any SB2 rifle frame made 1999 or later will be the strongest frames, H&R won't fit any of the asterisked marked barrels in the accessory barrel list to frames made before 1999 which is denoted by a serial number prefix of NN or HN or later, those codes are shown in the FAQ which I think you've already seen.

Older frames made 1986 and before were of all one frame design, there was no SB1 or SB2, they were all the same, hence the  limit to low pressure calibers. Current production .45-70 frames will handle all 1895 levergun loads and then some, but most folks let the recoil limit the loads they prefer to shoot in them, even moderate levergun loads can be severe in an unmodified Handi or BC.

I use either weight or a mercury recoil reducer and a Limbsaver recoil pad on all of mine for bench work, they can hurt ya if you don't do something to curb the recoil with stout loads.

...Never seen one!

Marv:
Now you've seen one. Of course it had originaly a 32 inch barrel, carried a brass cleaning rod under the barrel and had no recoil pad. I cut this one down to 20 inches to make her "Carbine" length.
