Need your thoughts on an old Bushnell
« on: June 08, 2007, 05:13:50 PM »
I have an old (25yrs+) Bushnell 3x-9x BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator) Banner that I bought new, paid something like $200 for it and and has been riding my Rem 700BDL in 270Win.  It is not as clear as my Nikon Monarch and Bushnell Trophy & Elite 4200 but it has been a great scope and have never had any problems with it.  I am thinking about moving it to a RWS 350Magnum Airgun.  The magnum airguns are very hard on scopes and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this Bushnell.  Where was it made, your opinion of it, quality, etc.

It should say made in Japan on the scope somewhere, all of my old Bushnells do. I wouldn't put it on a spring air gun, that would be most likely dooming it if it isn't air gun rated. There are plenty of inexpensive heavy air gun rated scopes that I'd choose before using a scope like that which is perfectly serviceable as it is on other conventional firearms. It also has a  parallax free  setting much in excess of what an airgun scope would need, probably 100yd-150yds, so parallax error at airgun range is going to be substantial.

One scope I can recommend is a BSA 3-12x44, I've had one mounted on a Crosman 377 for 4yrs now, it's bullet proof for a $90 scope. Lawdog, a member here that passed away a year or so ago, had a bunch of these on many different air guns and I followed his recommendation on this scope, he was right. But there are many other scopes that will serve you well, the links below should give you a little insight on what models to choose from, the 350 is a heavy spring gun. Many of those scopes are sold by a GBO sponsor, The Optic Zone, so be sure to check em out.

Tim,

Great information and thanks for the links.  Opticzone doesn't carry the BSA.  Any idea who is carrying them?

Another GBO sponsor, Midsouth carries it, although it's out of stock right now, they indicate it's overdue, so it could be in anytime.

How about the Millett Gold AO?  It is not an Airgun scope but it is quality.  I have one that I have been using on a rimfire and for $130 it is very good.  It is much better quality than the BSA and Leapers Airgun scopes that a lot of people are recommending.  As you can tell I am not a big fan of the cheap scopes.  Also, it has lifetime warranty.

Do you think it can take the double whammy recoil of the airguns.

Not if it isn't made to handle airgun recoil, specially the RWS 350's, you'd have to check with the Mfr on that. What's the minimum range on the AO?
