Info on shooting conicals?
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:45:04 AM »
I picked up some no excuses 50-460 conicals to shoot in my TC Black Diamond XR. I understand I need a wad between the charge and the bullet. I thought I could just go to the local sporting goods store (Sportsmans Warehouse) and pick up the right wad. Nobody there knew much about it and left me confused. What is the best wad? Could someone give me step by step instructions on the loading process? How is the wad loaded? Does it just lay flat on top of the powder automatically? Does it have to be tamped before the conical goes in? Is there any lube involved in this process? Any tips for when I hit the shooting range?

I just called No Excuses. He was very helpful and told me the wad is not necessary.

Dave is right of course, you don't have to have a wad between the charge and bullet. I do get more consistant shot to shot accuracy using a wad with increased powder charges without a leading problem.

What type of powder are you using? You will only need between 70 and 85 grains of powder for those bullets. I use 80 grains 777 FFFG and that bullet as my back-up elk load, will shoot under 2" in my Huntsman at 100 yards w/peep sight. I use a fiber gasket wad between the charge and bullet. The White Super Slug (obsolete) will shoot under 1-1/2", same powder and rifle and what I used on the little 5x5 in the avatar.

The QLA (false muzzle) on the T/C might not allow you to shoot very accurate and consistant with conicals. Just the cold hard facts, unless you get lucky. Most of the QLA's are not concentric with the bores and cause havoc with accuracy.

I use the Sagebrush wads, .060 50 cal.=.518 dia ~ Item# S-26518. Just push one down between the charge and bullet. Others use felt wads, both lubed and unlubed.

Busta Knows!  ;)

85 grains of 777 fffg! WOW! Now that's a load out of a Huntsman! I have great luck making my own wads out of picture frame cardboard backing. I got a 1/2 hollow punch, so I punch my own. I load the same way. 85 grains of 777 ffg (only because I couldn't find fffg until this past week), I hit the area where the powder sits with the heal of my hand to level the powder, place a wad over the muzzle, push it down firm on the powder, then load the conical down on the wad firm. In my research I have found pure lead like the NoExcuses do not lead the barrel a easy as hard cast. Pure lead has a higher milting point than hard cast, becomes soft under heat, comforms to the rifling, but hold together. Where as hard cast will strip off in the rifling thus leading the barrel. I know, I would have never thought that myself. But I have found it in writing from real experts!!!!

My buddy cayugad has had great luck with NoExcuses in his TC Black Diamond XR, even with the QLA! You'll never know until you try. Another buddy Jason gets great accuracy in his knight shooting the NoExcuses. I shot a White, so you know I get proven results with the NoExcuses.

Like I've said before, a big time big game bullet. Anything from 70 grains to 90 grains will get the job done!
