338 WM elk bullet
« on: October 31, 2006, 04:07:30 PM »
I am looking to work up a load for an Idaho elk hunt. At this point I am kind of leaning towards Nosler 210 gr partitions but am curious as to what others have been successful with

thats a good choice..have you tried the new barnes triple shocks.I think they are great.I have used both.and I like the barnes better.they load up differnt so it makes a new challange for me reloading.and I have had great accuracy with them.but good luck with what ever you decide on.ther are a lot of good bullets out there today.even those bonded bear claws.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I use Nosler 200 grain ballistic tips and now the white tipped Combined Tech stuff.  They are made for heavy game, are accurate, and are ballisticly superior to the partitions.

225gr. Partitions really hit 'em hard from a 338WM.

I handload 225 grain partitions with 72.0 gr of H4831. I get a little over 2800 fps out of my Remington 700.  I love this load and have taken 3 elk with it. Two were bulls and one cow. What part of Idaho will you hunt? Maybe I can give you some advise since I live north of Boise.

A Nosler  Partiton will put down Elk real good . Between my Dad and I we have taken 6 Elk
with  Partitions . My 338 win mag. Really likes the 210gr. I warm up my loads with H-4350 ,
I won't say how much , but it's alittle hot . 4000 lbs.  energy. Elk go down !!

The 225 partitions have worked for me,  I have only used the 210's on deer they should work fine too as weel as the 225 accubond, I have yet to try any of the TSX wich is yet another good selection. Once I am out of 225 partitions, I'll probably go to the accubonds, my gun has always preferred the BT's over the partitions and the acubonds should give me the best of both worlds.

Have been using the 225gr Nosler Partition for Moose for 25 years.   Ranges have been from 15 to 500 yards.  All but one were one shot kills, someone else had already shot the one and had done a bad job of it.

Sourdough,

Have you recovered any of the 225 gr PT's from the Moose or were they all pass throughs?
I think this bullet is perfect for my 338 RUM.

JD338, If the 225 Accubonds perform anything like the 200AB out of my 300RUM, you will be in great shape.
I'm shooting the 225 AB from my 338wm Prohunter, but have not got to strike a hide yet.
200AB from 300rum put two elk down last week. Both fell in their tracks. Both a little over 400yrds. No bullet recovered, both were pass-thru's.  A couple of guys shooting 300wm with NP bullets killed elk but recovered bullets on outside hide.(no blood trail if needed). Very pleased with the Accubond Bullets.

Good Luck, DM

dancoman,
Do you think the 338 RUM pushing a 225gr Accubond bullet would kill a Zebra?
I've heard some good things about the Accubond bullet

jro45, by the way the 500-600 lb elk reacted to the 200AB, I don't believe a zebra (or much else) could stand a 225 AB from a 338RUM.

Dancoman,

Thanks for the reply. The 225 gr AB is an amazing bullet in my 338 RUM. For Moose, I think I would opt for the 225 gr PT. I was just curious what kind of penetration Souordough had
with the 225 gr PT's on moose.

jro45,

Redhawk1,
My self, Fil, and a lawyer, the three of us are going. The package is for 3 or 4 different animals. I want a Zeber,Warthog and the rest i'LL decide when there. the whole deal was very reasonable Alittle under $5,000
For the plane trip and the hunt.
I'll be using my 300 Rum and my 338 RUM. The 300 will push 200 Nosler partitions the 338 will push 225 Nosler partitions.
