Savage Model 10ML-II issue
« on: November 24, 2006, 02:10:16 PM »
I bought my son a ML-II because it shoots smokeless powder. When using the bullet and sabot recommended by Savage (MMP sabots and Hornady .452 bulllets) loading is difficult to the point of not being practical. This is whether the gun is newly clean or dirty.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

I had a Savage M/L and it was a PITA >:( to load. They have to have a tight fit,to burn the smokless powder. After a day at the range ,I felt like I had been to the gym. They do have great range(depending on the shooters skill, but I just picked up a T/C Prohunter, and it loads easy and is good to 250yds. That's a pretty good poke,in anybody's woods! :)

Try using harvester sabots... the short black variety. I use the 300gn .452 XTP's w/ the short black Harvester's and get less than MOA at 100yds with 65gn of IMR4198. Velocity avg is 2272 fps...

Is the rifle stainless? The stainless bores come out of the factory a little rough sometimes, need a little polishing.
Get some JB bore paste and give that bore 200 strokes.
The Savage, done properly, is not too difficult to load. I have one, and the 250 XTP goes down without  trouble. I have the blued barrel, and I used the 200 strokes of JB. This did make it a little easier to load.
This is another great Savage forum.
These guys are very friendly to newbees, and will help you with any problem.
