300 Win vs 338 Lapua
« on: November 24, 2006, 09:49:59 PM »
Looking at all factors, does the 338 Lapua mag still hold a significant advantage over the 300 Win mag at 1000 yards and under?
I've been eyeballing that AR-30, but can't decide on the caliber. The advantages of the 338 would be significantly greater energy, flatter trajectory, and better wind-bucking ability. The disadvantages are a higher initial cost of the rifle, higher cost of factory ammo, and higher cost of reloading equipment and supplies. Recoil is not as much of a facor with the muzzle break, but the blast is.
I've been told that the 338 really starts to shine at 1000+ yards... so if I don't really have plans on shooting the cartridge past 1000 yards, is there really any sense in spending the extra bucks on the 338 just cause it's really cool?

"Shooting at 1000 yards isn't hunting" he said, then ran like heck for the safety of another forum. His body was found later by a pack of coon dogs and forensic analysis of his teeth confirmed his identity. "Never saw anything like it", said the medical examiner. "Someone shot the word 'idiot' across him using .338 bullets. Neat work, too. Used his bellybutton to dot the 'i'"

I own the 338 RUM and the 300 Win Mag. Either will shoot to 1000yds. With the 338 it bigger bullets and the 300 it bullets are smaller. So what do you want to do?

the .338 will be less affected by wind and have more energy at any range . ;D

I guess I forgot to mention an important piece of info... I don't actually plan on hunting with the rifle.

at that range the 338 Lapua  is the hot ticket ,some say more accurate than a .50 .

If you arent planning on hunting, and just showing off, then definitely go for the .338.  Why keep it under 1000 yards when you have the choice to go over?  Your buddies wont like to see how you outshoot them, but there is nothing wrong with a little competitive advantage right?  ;D

Umm, if your willing to spend that kind of money on a 338 Lapua, why not get a 50 bmg instead ? they pretty much almost cost the same...

If you want a massive 30 caliber, get a 300 RUM, load it with a 220 grainer and you'll see how nice it works @1000 yards.

If you want a massive 338 caliber, get the 338 RUM, ALOT cheaper than the 338 lapua.

If you want to be practical, get a 308, its what most bench rest shooters use for 1000 yards.
