What barrel length?
« on: February 19, 2007, 12:27:48 PM »
I've more or less decided to eventually get myself a S&W 629 .44 with what will probably be an 8 375 barrel.  I currently have a SRH in a 7.5 barrel.  I have shot a couple of deer with it.  As far as I know this gun will be a pure hunting gun.  Also, I will almost certainly be going with open sights.  When I'm practiced up I can shoot pretty decent out to 75 yards.  Will the 6 inch barrel hamper me in any way for those shots over 50 yards?

I currently have a 686 .357 with the 4 inch barrel, and it definately handicapps me past 50 yards.

Thanks.

The key is in your own question:  PRACTICE.  The 6" 629 which I own by the way, will be of little or no handicap in my opinion.  The 6" is a good compromise of sight radius and portability.  When in practice my .475  with a little 4-3/4" barrel will stay in 3-4" at 100 yds. off my knees, (field position).  I wouldn't want to bet on doing it right now, because I haven't been practicing with it enough.  I think the 6" would serve you well.
