25-06 vs 'yotes?
« on: March 21, 2007, 05:38:55 PM »
Is the 25-06 round using a 120 gr. bullet fired from a Thompson Encore with a 15" barrel a viable anti-coyote gun?   I'm buying that gun and now I'd like to find something appropriate to shoot it with!! Actually, I'm hoping that a lighter bullet with a flatter trajectory will be up to the task.  How light can I go against the 'yotes?

Well Dusty, some people go after coyotes with the 17 HMR and claim good success.  The 22-250 is more than sufficient for coyotes so I would say your 25/06 with anything you want to put through it should be overkill (pun intended).

I've shot many a coyote with my Old Ruger 25-06 while deer hunting. Used both 100gr SP & 120 HP Hornady's. You could go down to the 90 gr bullets for coyotes with no problems. I prefer the 100 gr for the flat shooting. Only problem is the blast of the 25-06. I prefer the 22 caliber centerfire rifles for coyotes ( less noise ). But I still love the 25-06, it will put down a coyotes at 300-400 yds with no problem. If noise is not a problem the 25-06 is the prefect long range coyote gun.
