H&R muzzleloader barrel
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:33:59 PM »
I am planning on getting started in muzzleloader hunting and as I have 2 H&R rifles  I was thing of getting a barrel for one of them. I am curious if the guys shooting H&R muzzleloaders would recommend getting the barrel, just buying an H&R muzzleloader or looking at a different brand of gun. Does H&R make a good muzzleloader and are there lots of problems with them that I could avoid by buying a different make?

I have a 24in. Huntsman and really like it. The design is simple, it is easy to clean (for a MZLDR), and mine shoots good. The price is good to. I am going to buy a thread converter for the ramrod and make me a better breach plug removal tool. At some point I plan on getting a 26in. barrel, maybe even another in stainless.

The huntsman is one of the best designs on the market in my opinion. Mine shoots as good as any rifle I have at 100yds. There's some out there that look better but few that shoot better.

I have a handirifle .223 and was cosidering a ML barrel. After checking price a huntsman wasn't much more so I bought the huntsman. I'm really glad I did.

I agree with "pap".  For the difference in price, go ahead and get a dedicated Huntsman.  It's not that much more.  That what I did and it gives me the ability to grab the muzzleloader if I want, OR, grab the other Handi and slap on the .243, or the .308.

Better get one while ya can, H&R is discontinuing the Huntsman as a rifle, it will only be available as an accessory barrel.

Not sure that H&R is discontinuing the Huntsman. According to reports I have heard they claim that is not true. I guess I will have to call and verify.

Do a search at Sports South, other than a Huntsman 50/12ga combo they have in stock, they show no Huntsmans at all, just Sidekicks. Someone emailed H&R and got a reply that the Huntsman will still be available in the accessory barrel program. The missing Huntsmans in Sports South's inventory shows that is likely true. :( They show the 2 new offerings tho, the .444 Marlin and .45Colt BC.
