Smith 686 6": factory deer loads?
« on: December 06, 2006, 05:45:59 AM »
picking one up, going hunting this weekend
texas whitetail, will be in a blind for the most part with a rifle for long shots
occasionally, one gets too close :)

I am leaning towards a 158sp based on the reading I have been doing here

Has anyone tried the American Eagle 158SP in a 6" 686? how'd they group?

I haven't shot much of the American Eagle ammo so I can't comment on it's potential. If you're going after deer with factory loaded 357 magnum's though, then you're making a good choice using the 158g SP's. If you're looking for reasonably priced ammo, I'd suggest the Mag-Tech if you can find it. Around here it sells for less than Remington, Winchester, and such, and shoots real good in most guns from what I've seen. It also gives very good terminal performance on deer.

thanks
it was reading some of your posts that made me want to go with the 158 SPs
I tend to like SPs in rifles so it's not a hard sell to me
I'll use hot HPs for personal defence, up close and personal use :)
but the SP makes sense in a hunting round
