maximum effective range
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:18:45 PM »
What are the max.effective ranges for the .22 and .22 mag in a Single Six type revolver? I like to carry something with me that isn't too heavy when walking or working the farm. I have thought about a .357 mag w/4" bbl.. Shooting the occasional close range groundhog, fox or coyote.Rarely see them but if I do and don't want to carry the Redhawk or Smth auto in .40 ....

With the 22 magnum cylinder loaded up with hyper velocity HP's, you're maximum "effective" range on foxes, or groundhogs will be 20-25 yards, and that's only with good bullet placement. As for a coyote, unless you get a "perfect" head shot you'll likely never find him.

In my opinion, you'd be a lot better served by the 357 magnum loaded with mid-range 357 SP loads, or 38 specials. It'll handle coyotes, and groundhogs up to 50+ yards, and won't blow a fox up too bad either.
