Best crimp for reloading 454 Casull
« on: November 27, 2006, 02:00:33 AM »
need a little info on which is the best crimp for a 454. should i use a tapper crimp or a lee factory crimp. I use the lee factory crimp on my 44 and 357 with no problems and i like it. Another question? How do you no when you have enough crimp or to much crimp? Most tell you to turn it down till it touches and then about 1/2 trun more. how do you no if you are over crimping the round? ofcourse you can go to far and buldge the case. thanks

Favorite powders for this cartridge, such as H110 or W296, require a very firm, normally roll, crimp.  I have outstanding results using a Lee Factory crimp die for 454, 357, 38 sp., 45 acp, and 223 rounds.  If you crimp too much and form a bulge, the Lee Factory crimp die will resize the (straight-walled handgun) round as it leaves the die so that it will function well in the weapon.  Follow the instructions that come with the die and you should have no problems.  Enjoy your 454!

A second vote for the Lee Factory crimp.  I have had nothing but good luck with mine.  When using plinker type loads (Unique and 250 gr. bullets) I only use a 1/2 turn, but with full-power H110 loads and 300+ grain bullets I use a full-turn of the die.  This has resulted in better accuracy and no soot on my cases.  If I 1/2 turn it, I have soot on my cases with tells me the chamber pressure has not reached the point to seal the case against the wall with 1/2 turn crimp, the full turn crimp holds the bullet until the proper pressure is reached, resulting in more consistent burns and velocities.

I reckon I kinda "gild the lilly" on crimpting this big powerful cartridge.  When  I first began loading for it back in the mid to late '80s, I had a standard set of RCBS dies provided by FA.  With the specs on the revolver being so close and some of the H110 loads being compressed loads, sometimes there was a little "post-roll-crimp" buldging and failure to chamber easily or at all.  To complicate matters, I was also loading a cast GC FP 250 grain bullet from a Lyman mould also direct from FA.  It had no crimp groove:

I solved this to my satisfaction with a taper crimp die from Lee.  Later the techs at FA told me about the LeeFactoryCrimp die and I found it worked well with the FA thick jacketed bullets and the cast bullet, now joined by another design, again from FA
Since then I've arrived at a method that makes me happy with the accuracy and the "hold" (neck tension) in preventing any "crimp jump" on the already near maximum length bullets and also giving small groups.  I use a Redding profile crimp initially and then run the round through the LFC die, just bearly "bumping" the crimp device in the die.

Another vote for the Lee factory crimp die. Wouldn't use any other. ;D
