About Lee Liquid Alox for Black Powder
« on: December 08, 2006, 04:58:42 PM »
I called Lee and asked them and here is the reply I got. He said it is ok to use with black powder but in a hunting situation you maybe could shoot it a couple times but that would be about it as it does nothing to soften the fouling like a traditional black lube does. He thought for extended target shooting you would get a lot of fouling build up unless you swabbed a lot.  He said he tried it in a black powder revolver and it got fouled real quick to the point the cylinder would not turn. I do not know I use it for smokeless but not sure if I would for black powder. I will stick with a more traditional BP  type of lube for my conicals.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I tried it once using a substitute BP (don't recall which one) and will not use it again. In a 50 caliber rifle shooting REALs I ended up with thick, gooey, asphalty sludge. I don't recall how many shots I fired (I'm starting to sound like Hillary with all the I don't recalls).

I just use cooking oil or crisco mixed with bee's wax for the REALs. I coat a few all the way to the top ridge to use as a first shot. The rest I just have enough lube to fill the bottom groove.

Yea that is pretty much the way I do it too. I know if I coat my 45/70 bullets heavy with lee liquid alox I get a brown smoke when I fire it though I does not seem to crud up the barrel and this is using smokeless powder. I have heard before it does not mix well with black powder or the subs so I just use beeswax and crisco and veg oil except I fill all the grooves.
