DO ANY OF YOU HUNT BLACKPWDER ONLY?
« on: November 13, 2006, 04:49:46 AM »
I  am thinking of  going to blackpowder only. i have gotten in to crossbow hunting pretty hard i have already tagged out with my crossbow. i found a wma close to my house that is bow only yesterday 4900 acres seen five trucks all day killed a nice seven point so i think thats were i will spend next years modern gun season. but i also hunt some quota hunts witch are black powder or muzzle loader. i bought a new cva kodiak and just think it will cover all my GUN needs of all the deer i have killed with a gun not many 10-12 no shots over 125 yards woul my kodiak not handle this. i sold my 7mm-08 and am going to upgrade my croobow for next year. do you think my kodiak can handle double duty?   one last thing does yhis sound like a good starter load for my gun? 245 powerbelt aero tip     100 grains  777 loose powder thanks.

The first question,

I only hunt with a muzzleloader. That being a White Super 91, and a White G-Series Whitetail Hunter. I can't help on the others, but I shoot a 460 grain NoExcuses Pure lead conical being pushed with 85 grains of 777 ffg, fired off with a Remington #11 primer. I have a Burris FFII BP on the 91, and a Lyman SMET on the Whitetail! Been hunting that way for over 5 years even thou Mississippi made single shot break actions rifles that are period before 1900 in 45/75 or any bullet being the size of 38 cal or larger. 44 mags, 444, 38/55, 500 SW, and what ever.

I just get a kick our of muzzleloding.

I hunted with a muzzleloader only for the past four or five years, after selling my Savage .270. That said... I'm on the prowl for a Marlin 336 - there have been two times this year - TWO! - where I could have used a 2nd shot.

While I won't say I have gone completly bp I can count on one hand how many times I grabbed anything but my encorein the last 4 years.  Your ML will cover your needs well out to two hujndred yards.  If you haven't wasted your money on the powerbelts yet I would buy either the shockwave or deAd center sabots, but that is just my opinion.  enjoy your ml and your hunt

In the area of Michigan where I hunt you can use shotguns, handguns or muzzleloader for deer.  The last 4 years I have carried a shotgun once.  I enjoy using my muzzzleloader and don't feel undergunned at all using it.  We have a two week firearm season, Nov 15th to the 30th, then a muzzleloader season that goes from Dec 1st to the 17th, then a antlerless only season that goes from Dec 18th to Jan 1st.  I use my Knight for all of them.  I even turkey hunt often with a 12 ga frontstuffer.

Critter do you use the knight 12 ga.  If so how do you like it. I had the trad. bp shotgun but wasn't happy.  I was looking at Cabela's at their double barrel bp 12 ga.  when I saw the knight.  Just curious what you think of it if you have one.

I sighted in my shotgun but am unsure it'll end up being shot.  I much prefer the ML, and out of my last 25 deer shot with a gun I think maybe 3 of them were not with a ML.

I like all of the different hunting methods, rifle, handgun, bow and muzzleloader. I can't see going to just one.  ;D

Manofthe.45,
I do not have the Knight 12ga but I would like to.  I have a T/C Renegade stock with an Italian 12 ga barrel on it.  The barrel is half octagon/half round and is a drop in fit to the stock.  I have shot one(the Knight) and it shoots well.  I am hoping to have one before next turkey season.

straying slightly off-topic here...

I wonder what T/C Inc would charge for a stock assembly order - minus the Renegade barrel??? Anyone sought-out a price from T/C on that? My guess would be around $225.
Keep that ML smokin'

So far this year, I've used only my Encore 50 cal ML.  I didn't even bring my slug gun out for Minnesota whitetails this season.  I did have my 44 mag Super Blackhawk along though.

I leave in a few days for a South Dakota Mule Deer hunt.  I'll be bringing my faithful .270 for that trip.  It's been too long since I've used that one.

No out-of-state trips planned for next season as of now so it'll probably be just me and my Encore again next season.

Yes my son and I plan on only using the Muzzlelaoders from here on out.
This was our first year and hunted both the deer and elk Muzzleloader seasons.

Although I haven't sold off my rifles and shotguns I do 95% of my hunting with my CVA Eclipse ML. I started hunting with that before shotgun and rifle and have taken all my deer with it. For it being an econo ML it sure has put a lot of meat in the freezer. It's an exposed plunger style action and I once had a primer fall out on me, I quickly seated another primer and took a nice doe, but since then I put a little dab of bore butter on the side of the primer and that helps to holds it right in place.
