Loose 777 vs pellets...
« on: December 03, 2006, 11:21:44 AM »
My apologies because I know this has been covered before.  I just can't find it through the search feature.

But....is a 100 grain of loose powder an equivalent charge to two - 50 gr. pellets?

My recollection is that there was a difference.

Thanks.

Two 50gr 777 pellets = ~100 gr Pyrodex/blackpowder

Since 777 is about 15% more powderful (by volume) than Pyrodex/BP, two 50gr 777 pellets is only worth about 85gr loose 777.

They do this because if each pellet was worth the same volume loose powder, people would get confused and drop down 150gr of 777 pellets and have an over-charged gun.  Though I'm sure a lot of people don't realize this with loose powder and over-charge anyways.

I don't use pellets, so correct me somebody if I'm off base.

AndyHass you got it right.

A 50 gr. triple seven pellet is about 40.5 gr. of loose triple seven, that is why you can load either 3 triple 7 pellets or 120 gr. of loose triple 7 powder.

I can't understand the diffrence between the pellets, and loose powder velocity? My gun is shooting 2115fps. with 120grs T7 2F Loose powder, but if I go to 3 pellets it's supposed to shoot 2200fps.? What's the diffrence between the two loads, that causes the pellets to produce more velocity? Ron ???

Because the pellets are not always the same weight, you may have ones weight different  than another. But if you did a 10 shot chronograph test with each, your averages would be real close.

Your  breechplug design and the primer also have some effect on the light off characteristics of powder. Pellets and loose powder do not light off the same.
