295 grain aerotip powerbelts - are they effective on game?
« on: November 29, 2006, 10:28:02 AM »
I am using my NEF Sidekick to hunt next week.  The only load that I have shot out of it is the 295 Grain aerotip with 3 pyrodex pellets and winchester 209 primers.  It is accurate at 50 yards with open sights.  I have read mixed reviews on the terminal effectiveness of the powerbelts, however.  How well do they work on deer?
Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes? :)

I have taken a few deer with the 295 gr Aerotips, 10 to 50 yards, some contacted bone and some did not...performance has seemed fine to me.  But, I'm shooting them out of a Hawken with 85 grains of loose Pyrodex.

Out of my inline (a Winchester Apex), I'm shooting 130 grains of Pyrodex behind the 338 gr Platinum Powerbelt.  This has been my first season to use that setup, and I took 2 deer in Illinois with it a couple of weeks ago.  A large buck at 150 yards and a good-sized doe at about 15 feet.  Both contacted at least one shoulder and both exited leaving good blood trails.

Not sure if this helps, since you're shooting the lighter bullet at a higher velocity.  I would think you'll be fine with animals the size of whitetails....
