I noted in another post that you mentioned that you've used the Lee Factory Crimp die in .45 Colt. What kind of crimp does that put on yer rounds? Is it a "factory" roll crimp or is it the nice SQUEEEEEZE crimp like those on .45ACP?

The reason I'm askin is because I ordered a Factory Crimp Die for my boys .45ACP loading (they shoot a lot of that stuff and get jams with lead slugs and jacketed stuff is too expensive fer em!$!$!) and wondered if that die could be adjusted to use fer my .45 Colt loads.

Hey Ho Cutts!

The .45 Colt Lee Carbide Factory Crimp makes a crimp that Lee calls a roll crimp; but IMHO it horse of a different color.  It ain't a taper crimp neither, like what a Colt .45 autoloader needs fer proper headspacing  (Lee says the Colt .45 auto loader version is a taper crimp -- I think).  Best I can describe the .45Colt version is sort of a step crimp.  The case mouth is sized down in sort of a near parallel area about 1mm wide.  It does a good job and makes a consistent crimp without stretching cases.

The crimp seems no stronger than a proper roll crimp applied with the seating die, but the factory crimp also final sizes the cartirge to at least maximum allowable spec so yer cartriges should always chamber.  That latter feature works fer me pretty well as I use fire formed cases that are only fully sized up where the boolits fits.  The factory crimp die just barely sizes the rest of the cases to assure they fit either my Roogers or Marlins.  My danged derringer has undersized chambers and must have full length resized cases (may have that corrected).  If'n yer using a four or five hole press, its a good deal.  Don't know if its worth an extra single stage step.

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhh!  I didna answer yer question, did I?  I may not have the correct answer; but I "think"  it may well be possible to use the Colt .45 with its taper crimp on a .45Colt revolver cartrige.  I don't see where that would hurt so long as ya get a nice reliable crimp.   But, ya probably should not; maybe can not use the .45 Colt revolver crimper on the Colt .45 auto loader type case as it may not headspace properly.  Would not want to fire out of battery, would ya?
