approximate cost for a TLA?
« on: July 15, 2006, 09:46:03 PM »
This is my first look at this forum, and the gun pics have me VERY interested in these guns.  I know it will take some looking, but about how much should I expect to pay for an average specimen?  How does the accuracy of these guns stack up against other quality pieces?  Thanks.

Once in a while you see the plain #5 for sale on gunbroker.com from 1250 US and up.  The trouble is finding one.

There is one that has been on Gunbroker.com for several weeks for 1850.00 US.  Maybe you will hit the lotto between now and the next time he lists it.  good luck!

Yeah, I'd have to look at 1800+ pretty hard.  It took me 15 years to justify spending that on my .475.  Glad I did though.  Are these #5's anything special in the accuracy department?  If I ever do decide I can't live without one, I will be pretty disappointed if it won't do better than 2" at 25 yards.  Any idea of the breakdown of calibers?, meaning did they make alot more in 1 caliber than another?  I would probably go .45 Colt, .44 Special, .44 Mag, in that order, unless they had any other more interesting chamberings I haven't heard of.   Thanks.

The 3 TLA's that I own are all quite accurate.  The 45 Colt will be quite rare and harder to find.  Expect quite a bit of competition when they come up for bid.  Have a look at Dave Clements site.  He builds Rugers with #5 style parts. I saw one he did at the Shootists Holiday and it was to die for.  Not cheap though,  all depends on what you want.  I should have mine in the next few weeks.

I know this is an old post, but I figured I'd make a comment on it re: calibers.  From what I've been able to gather in my research, the #5 is most common in .44 Magnum with a few .45 Colt guns.  There were even fewer .44 Specials made, one of which sold pretty cheaply last year on Gunbroker and I regret not buying it.  The rarest appear to be the few stainless #5s he made.  There is rumored to be at least one .32-20 out there, but I've not seen any hard facts on that.  Also, I know of one .45 Colt gun that had a .45 Win Mag auxiliary cylinder.
