Upgrading combo gun

I am buying a new combo gun. Valmet mfg. Savage in 12ga/308. Just sent the MO yesterday so will be a while before I recieve it.  ;D been looking for a while for what I want. Byron

Found it advertized on another forums classifieds.  ;D It was in Atlanta, GA. Hope this one does the trick for me. It already has scope mounts and rings on it. I'll try pictures but am pretty challagened with computers. Byron

  Those Savage 2400's are nice guns...  I have one myself...  Hopefully it hasn't had a lot of heavy loads through it, as the 2400 was a smaller frame than Valmets 412, and "will" shoot loose if used hard.

  I like mine, my biggest complaint has always been, no double triggers available...   :(

Drilling Man, I picked up my savage 2400 and the shipping gorilas had been at work. The gun is tight, happy about that. The wrist was cracked, not completely seperated but you can spread the crack open slightly. And the part of the rib where the scope rings twist in was knocked of the barrel. Do you think repair is possible. The person I bought it from will take it back or pay 200.00$ for repairs. Please advise, Byron

  The stock can be repaired with accraglass but it will probably look "repaired" when your done...  As for the rib??  :'(   I have no idea without it in my hands to see for myself...

  I think the "real" question is, can it all be repaired for $200.00??

  I think if you want the gun to look really nice at the end, the answer is no...  If you want a shooter, then you certainly can turn it into a decent shooter..

  How much did you have to give for the gun?

Drilling Man, $625.00 shipped. I don't know if the entire rib is one piece or two pieces. The rib is broben in front of the front ring mount. The part thar has been knocked off is 5" long. If looks to me like it was silver souldered on and there is some evidence of rust on the barrel and bottom of the rib. Thanks, Byron

  Well, i'm not you but i'd much prefer the Valmet 412 over the Savage 2400, so i'd return the Savage, get all my $$ back and look for a 412....  BUT, i'm not you and YOU may like the 2400 better??

  Not that the Savages were junk or anything, they just don't have the options available that the 412's do...

Would the Valmet be available in a rimed case in 6.5 or 7mm? And a 16ga barrel. Byron

  I've seen 412's all over the board price wise...  from about $550.00 on up depending on what bbl set it has on it and condition....

  The 412 is a "little" bigger and heavier than the 2400 and it's also stronger too.  Also it has available lots of different bbl sets, QD scope mount, double triggers ect...  And it's still being made by Tikka, and those bbl sets and parts will fit the 412 frames too...

  I don't think they made a 16 ga, but they did offer some rimmed cartridges, especially in Europe...  I have a double rifle set in 7x65R.  You can shoot 16ga ammo in the 12ga. bbls with an adapter if you really want a 16...

It is not so much that I prefer a 16 as I thought the gun might be slimmer. I really like a slimmer gun. The main thing about the 2400 compared to the 24 is the 2400 feels much more lively in my hands. More like a fine shotgun.   All of the frames have to be the same, so all of the bbls. will interchange...

Well I am returning the savage 2400 for a refund. The person I purchased it from thinks that is best and I believe he's right.
Theres no one in the area where I live that can repair it, so repair will get expensive. Like DM advised it will probably look repared also. Thanks for the advise. Guess I'm back to still looking.  ;D Regards, Byron
