Contender a starter gun with room to grow?
« on: November 25, 2006, 09:15:25 PM »
Hello,

I just posted a question about a 22 starter rifle for my daughter on the rimfire forum,  however I keep thinking that a contender would be a great gun to start with and to grow with.  I could starther with a 16" 22mag then moveup to a 204 or 223 for coyotes and such then a 30/30 0r 7/30 for deer  use the skinner barrels and 16" to 18" lenghts and a stock to fit her from gun stocks inc.  ohh and I might mention that she is a lefty and that her dad loves his contender so she thinks they are pretty cool too.

thanks for your help

Carl

A contender would be an awesome starter rifle for a youngster.  Few guns offer the versatility of the T/C or the accuracy.  The swap barrel capability, the trigger...

Heck, I'm not really telling you anything, am I?

I agree completely.  My boys were both grown before I discovered Contenders.  If and when I have grand kids my guess is their fathers will think of Contenders to start them out.

I would disagree with your choice of the .22 magnum rather than the .22LR to start her with. Ammo cost difference between the two is a big difference. A new shooter needs lots of trigger time and the cheaper cost of the .22LR means more trigger time for less money. Other wise I think the Contender is an excellent starter gun for a youth and has plenty to offer later as well.

My 13 year old son prefers his Contender carbine .....in all of its variations to some pretty nice bolt guns. But he grew up with them from a factory 22 lr barrel to a 'full up custom job' in any one of several center fire chamberings.

I'd go 22LR as well, then go with a 30-30 Barrel (or similiar).  When 30-30 is not enough, there's always the 375 or an Encore

I kinda like the idea of the G2 with recock ability, rather than having to open the action for a youngster.

Carl,

You're on the right track.  My daughter now 14 started out with the 22 lr, then the 223.  This year I introduced her to my Encore in 6mm Rem.  It's a great way to start them out.  She bagged two doe's at 150 yards 3 weeks ago.  Both shots were right in the boiler room.  8)

Good luck!

tigmaned,

I don't see the Stocks for $30 on the Bullberry website, is this an unadvertised special???  I'd get one for that price.

its way down at the botom of bullberry's web page, a little small word specials. click on it and you see the part about the stocks, or just call them since theres no link on the site to order it over the site. just tell them you want a t/c contender rynite stock for $30 buck and the fore ends are $15.
