glass bedding a remington stock
« on: December 04, 2006, 03:43:16 AM »
How do you go about glass bedding one of remingtons new synthetic stocks? I understand how to bed the reciver but I dont understand bedding the barrel channel as it is almost hollow except for the crisscrossing braceing. Also is there anyway to stiffen the foraram as it will bend an bow to easily. I think I read something somewhere where someone bedded a metal rod in the forarm to stifen it. Anybody know anything about this?

I usually bed aluminum arrow tubing in the forearm. Cap the tubes and clean thoroughly. They provide a lot of stiffness with little weight. Be sure to clean the interior of the stock well and rough it up to improve adhesion. I have also filled air space with the foam product used to insulate around the house. The name escapees me just now(a not uncommon occurance) but it comes in a can much like an old shaving cream can and it expands as it sets and hardens. Be careful to not 'enclose' it as it can build pressure. The foam doen't strengthen the stock appreciably but deadens the drum like sounds.

thanks I had thought about the foam like you are talking about but didnt think it would be durable enough to do what I wanted to do. Can you put bedding on top of that stuff an it accomplish the same effect? The arrow is a good idea alot better than a piece of 1/4 inch rod I was going to use.

I don't use the foam as a structural component, it just helps silence the clunk.. The arrows are sealed(use shaft cutoffs from the local archery center) and embedded in an epoxy matrix. They provide a very stiff and light weight component to tiffen the stock. I don't know if the foam will stand up to AcraGlass. It may disolve! One could try it but the foam wouldn't be nearly as rigid as the arrow shafts..
