Most accurate 22 FA, Model 83 or 97 ?

I am ready to purchase the most accurate of the two 22lr models that Freedom Arms mfgs. I currently own a Model 83 44 mag with a 7 1/2 bbl topped with a Leupold 2 1/2 X 8 handgun scope. The Freedom Arms  model that I purchase will have a 7 1/2 bbl with a Leupold 4 X ( if I buy a Model 97) or a Leupold 2 1/2 X 8 (if I buy a Model 83). This handgun will be used for target and small game hunting. Questions: Which is the most accurate? I have read articles that the Model 97 is very accurate, but the trigger on a Model 97 can't be smoothed or lightened like a Model 83 trigger. I also read articles that stated the Model 83 is the most accurate of the two handguns and for hunting, the Model 83 is the handgun that Freedom Arms recomends. What about the match cylinders? Are they really more accurate? and are they harder to load and unload ? (being that the chambers are tighter) Sorry about the spelling errors. Just finished a 14 hour shift. I appreciate any info from the Freedom Arms Company or shooters who own any of the two handguns listed above.   PS: Graybeard, I love your website. Your a good man. Rod in  Pa.

I have never been able to tell much difference between a good 97 trigger and a good 83 trigger.  As for accuracy - don't think there is much difference, assuming a good trigger.  Match chambers are more difficult to load but not that necessary in my opinion.  Best answer is, whichever you shoot better.  Personally, I shoot the 83's better than the 97's.  If it was me, then, I'd get the 83.  Besides, you can find 83 Model 252's cheaper than you can 97's, unless you are buying "new."

A guy at FA told me the 83’s tend to shoot better on average than the 97’s, not much. He said it was just a characteristic of the heavier guns. I’m well satisfied with my 97/22 but I would like to have a 252 as an understudy to my 83’s.

I own both versions the 83 has a 10" barrel while the 97 has a 5 1/2" barrel. Both have the "match cylinder". Overall the 83 is more accurate. I've tested them both using a Burris 2x-7x handgun scoipe with a SSK mount and base. The 83 for me is around a 1/2 to 3/4 (+or-) 5 shot shooter at 50 yards with the right ammunition. The 97 is more in the area of 7/8 to around 1 1/4 at the same distance. I by no means am disappointed in the accuracy of the 97 as compared to my 83. The size difference between the 2 is considerable which I am sure is part of the reason. The trigger on both as far as the release goes can be made comparable but the feel of the action as far as smoothness goes easily falls to the 83. One thing you should consider though when deciding which one you want is how you want it set up. If your looking to scope it the 83 is better because of the size. I personally feel the 97 is better suited to either open sights or a small red dot sight. I left the Burris scope on the 83 but went to a leupod gilmore 1' tube with 2' dot for the 97. The 97 with that set up is best suited for me for around 35 yards max where the 83 with the burris scope is capable of maybe 60 yards. This is for trying head shots at squirrels under ideal conditions using a good steady platform in a blind. I can't do it all the time but I have done it now and then. I don't think you would be disappointed in either one just be aware of how you intend to use it before purchasing one. One last note it you decide to scope it the SSK is probably the finest mount available for this revolver. It may not be the cleanest looking of the ones that are available but it certainly is the most versatile and that make it the best choice in my opinion. Good luck

Thanks to Markh, Tscotto, and Shootist elite for your information. After reading your replys and talking to Bob at Freedom Arms I ordered a Model 83 7 1/2 bbl, match cylinder, trigger overtravel, honed 3 lb. trigger, 22 long rifle. and Lovell mounts. I should have it in about six weeks. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!
