.22 Hornet

Any Hornet owners out there?  I have the itch to get me one for a "plinker".  I want a centerfire that doesn't need a scope or is too large in caliber, so this looks like a good choice.

Anything I should know about the caliber?

I don't need the gun but who actually needs them.   ;D

I love my Handi rifle with the 22 hornet barrel. The only downside is that once you buy one you keep sending it back and getting new caliber barrels fitted. Kinda addicting.

that is EXACTLY what I bought my hornet for!  I wanted something with open sights that I could just lug in the woods and throw in the front seat of the pick up.  Hornets rock!  Just make sure you reload or you will not be able to afford to shoot it-lol!  I load mine with lil'gun and a 45 grain rem hollow point.  It groups pretty well 1 inch at 50y with the factory sites.  Good enough for the plinker it is.

Love my hornet.. I scoped and made loads that are just a hair over 1/4" @ 100 yds !! It's my favorite shooter !! Hunterwinco is right, you wanna reload for it. Boxes of shells run about 30 bucks for 50, and they can be picky as to what will shoot out them... Mine wanted nothing doing with remington, but winchester(more expensive!!) makes her sing with glee.. Last summer i was shooting bugs(grasshoppers and horseflies) @ 75 and 100 yds(off a bench rest of course, cant hold that steady otherwise), and splattering them..

I'd be glad to share my loads with you, for my hornet...

Li'l Gun powder 12.1 grns
Hornady SP 50 grn
Remington cases (1.403 length), weighed and sorted(these were between 44 and 45 grn, haven't gotten any stricter than that)
WSR primers
C.O.L.'s are set at 1.850, but I'm gonna try a longer COL later with another load..

My best groups have been .386 off a good rest.. :)

I'll be working up some new loads in the next few weeks, for 55 grn remingtons PLHP's, will let you know how that fares once I get them made up...

I lugged  ;D my superlight hornet around on a couple of coyote calling stands on the weekend, I hardly knew it was there. especially when compared to my partners heavy barrel Savage. No on game reports to give we got skunked.

Never underestimate the power of the hornet.. ;D My buddy takes his out for hunting deer and has takewn 3 so far(all head and neck shots), with no problems, dropped them all in their tracks..

In fact in africe they've been used to by professional hunters on zebra, with one shot kills as well.. It's all about shot placement.. ;)

I took my out a few times but haven't had any luck seeing deer..
