6.8 Rem. is GREAT
« on: November 08, 2006, 11:14:31 AM »
Hey guys,  Well Im reloading for the 6.8 Rem, 14" and having a blast.  Great little cartrige! Custom grips from Georgia Jims, with a Burris 4x scope.  What a white tail combo this is.  Very light recoil, with energy that will drop them cold.  Fast and hard hitting.  9" drop at 300 yards!  (not that I would shoot at that distance, but...). Thanks for all the advise last year guys!

Gobbletn,

Just curious...What bullets and powder are you using?  Is the bullets for this caliber the same as used for the 270 Winchester, ie, 0.277" in diameter?  The reason I ask is the fact that I have 1/2 dozen 270's and I really enjoy shooting cast in one that I have.  I would like to try the 6.8 as a cast shooter if it is a 0.277" diameter.  Thanks...BCB

Yes, to the .277 size.  The new .270 caliber (6.8mm) cartridge is the result of at least a two year cooperative effort between Special Operations, the Army Marksmanship Unit, and Remington. Various calibers from .22 to .30 were tested before settling on a standard .277" diameter bullet, the same bullet diameter made famous in the .270 Winchester.

Remington is offering four 6.8mm SPC factory loads, all with 115 grain bullets. These include two target loads, a Core-Lokt Ultra hunting load, and a Metal Case military-type load. No varmint load is included. The four factory loads all have a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2800 fps and a muzzle energy (ME) of 2002 ft. lbs. from a 24" test barrel. At 100 yards the metal case bullet (BC .325) has a remaining velocity of 2523 fps and energy of 1625 ft. lbs. At 200 yards the velocity is 2262 fps and the energy 1307 ft. lbs. And at 300 yards the velocity is 2017 fps and the remaining energy 1039 ft. lbs. These figures are taken from Remington's 2004 catalog.

The trajectory of the metal case bullet looks like this: +1.2" at 50 yards, +2.7" at 100 yards, + 2.8" at 150 yards, +1.4" at 200 yards, -3" at 267 yards, and -6.6" at 300 yards. The maximum point blank range (+/- 3") is thus 267 yards. These figures are computed for a rifle with a telescopic sight mounted 1.5" over the bore. This, just like the Army claimed, is similar to the trajectory of the .308 with a 150 grain bullet.

The lighter weight .277" varmint and hunting bullets will presumably be the most popular choices in the 6.8mm SPC, and the latter are not thick on the ground. Suggested examples include the 90 grain Speer HP varmint bullet, 100 grain Barnes X-Bullet, 115 grain Sierra HPBT, 115 grain Remington Core-Lokt Ultra, and 120 grain Barnes X-Bullet.

Fast to medium burning rifle powders such as RL-7, IMR 4198, IMR 3031, IMR 4895, H4198, H322, H335, and Benchmark are indicated in the 6.8mm SPC. The MAP of the 6.8mm SPC appears to be about 55,000 PSI.

Here is some reloading data from the Hodgdon Powder Company:

Starting Load - 90 grain Speer HP bullet, 26.0 grains of H4198 powder, MV 2810 fps, 47,700 PSI.
Maximum Load - 90 grain Speer HP bullet, 28.6 grains of H4198 powder, MV 3012 fps, 54,000 PSI.

Starting Load - 100 grain Barnes X-Bullet, 27.0 grains of H322 powder, MV 2502 fps, 37,700 PSI.
Maximum Load - 100 grain Barnes X-Bullet, 30.0 grains of H322 powder, MV 2803 fps, 52,300 PSI.

Starting Load - 115 grain Sierra HPBT bullet, 26.0 grains of H322 powder, MV 2421 fps, 43,500 PSI.
Maximum Load - 115 grain Sierra HPBT bullet, 28.2 grains of H322 powder, MV 2608 fps, 53,300 PSI.

Gobbletn,

Thanks for the interesting information.  I might further research this cartridge and consider it for a cast shooter.  The only problem might be is that I shoot the Lyman 280642 that weighs in at around 150 grains.  Maybe the twist is too slow for that slug.  But, I can size a Lyman 287346 down to .278" diameter.  This slug weighs in at around 135 grains.  We shall see...BCB

I just wanted to echo Gobbletn's cudos for the 6.8 Rem SPC.  I am shooting Remington's Express 115 gr. OTM ammo in both my T/C Contender Pistol AND my Contender Carbine.  This is my first T/C Pistol, and I am just amazed.  At 50 yds, off the bench, my 6.8 is grouping .375 C to C.  The pistol has a Bushell Trophy Red Dot (1x) mounted on it.  What a combination.  For anyone, especially us left handed shooters, who is looking for a holster for your T/C Pistol, check out the Gun-Mate Holster in Cabela's "Shooting" catalog (page 76).  I just purchased the Camo version for the Large Frame Revolver w/10" barrel for $29.99, plus shipping.  My T/C Pistol w/14" barrel AND Red Dot fit GREAT.  This is a "bandolier" style.  It can be worn either right or left handed, AND it can be worn as a belt holster, as well.  It is made by Uncle Mike's (Gun-Mate is a division of Uncle Mike's).  It is well made, and at half the price of the regular Uncle Mike's line and Thompson Center, it is a heck of a deal.  Oh, did I tell you that @ a 50 yard zero, the bullet only drops 7.8 inchs at 275 yards?  Try it!  You will like!  Joe

For those of you shooting 14" barrels in 6.8 Rem........

What velocities are you getting with the different bullet weights??

What loads have you used on critters in the field?

How effective has this load been for you on animals you have shot with it?

Look forward to your replies!!

Hey Del,
Some great questions and ones that I would also want the answers to.  Been thinking of getting the new barrel for my G2.  Hope someone fills us in on this new caliber.  ;)
