Sealing No. 1 barrel channel...???
« on: December 11, 2006, 06:07:03 AM »
Wondering what you Ruger No 1 shooters use to seal the barrel channel / inletting of your No 1's? I was thinking of Birchwood's gunstock sealer and filler for my RSI. I know that it is important not to change the barrel channel with sanding. Is there anything necessary to remove the stock besides unscrewing the draw bolt? I've had the forend off, but not the stock. Anything else I should be using or be aware of?

Thanks,

Ben

The stock comes off easy, use a long extension socket wrench. Just wiggle the stock loose. I seal the stock inside with Varithane on coat will do. Make sure the Varethane is dry and hard before putting the stock back on. The bolt should be tight, I add a lock washer on top of the flat washer.

When taking the stock off mark the loction of the wrench handle, after you breake the bolt loose retighten the bolt again to the handle mark, that will give you an idea how tight is tight. A Ruger#1 with a loose stock will never shoot well.

As usual Fred speaks the truth and his advice is great, just remember that if you add another wasker, especially a fairly think conventional split lock washer and you check the location of the wrench handle prior to first removing removing the stock bolt that the relative position of the wrench handle when you reinstall the stock bolt with the addittional lock washer will be differnet from when it was removed. Also do as Fred advises and ADD a lock washer, however do not use a lock washer without a flat washer between the wood and the lock washer....<><.... :)
