Problem with reloads.
« on: December 08, 2006, 04:32:37 PM »
I have an Ultra in 22-250 and i recently got a lee reloader and i made up a few loads. I followed the books and started at the starting point for my bullet and when i went to shoot them 3 out of the 5 bullets popped the gun open. i tried some differnt loads and went below the starting amount of powder and i was still having porblems with the gun popping open and i had a few cases get stuck in the chamber and i had to open and close the rifle a few times to get it out. does anyone know what could be the problem?

Sounds like inadequate latch engagement. See FAQ's for solution. Stuck cases may be a result of a rough chamber again see FAQ's

Best of luck, the 22-250 is a great cartridge!!

What McLernon said, but something else you need to check first is put one of those reloads in the chamber and sight across the chamber mouth or better yet, lay a metal straight edge across the chamber mouth and primer and make sure the case doesn't protrude out past flush with the chamber mouth, if it is sticking out, the cases aren't being resized properly in the Lee Loader. If that's happening, it's keeping the latch from engaging fully when the action is closed and a pop open will result. The stuck cases could be from the same problem if you close the action hard enough to jam the round into the chamber, the ejector isn't real strong and will fail to push it out.

If the bullet is loaded too long, it could also have the same effect, although this is unlikely in the normally long throated Handis.

As McLernon mentioned, a good chamber polishing will help prevent the sticking. You can also increase ejector spring pressure by putting a BB ahead of the ejector spring, the how to is in the FAQ also.

Let us know how the reloaded rounds fit in the chamber and we'll go from there. ;)

Tim

EDIT: This barrel does have an ejector, right? I just had an afterthought, I thought all .22-250s had extractors, but maybe not. Does the case fly out normally, or just lift out about ¼"?? If it's an extractor, there's a completlely different problem. :(

well i made up some new loads today and lowered the powder currently 33.3 gr of h4895 with a 50gr vmax. and the shells fit in fine and i thought maybe it was a primer issuse so i got some winchester primers and im still having the problem with it popping open. and it has the extrator. i even tried some winchester factory loads and it still popped open. it dosnt happen every time but it happens enough to make a guy mad.

Read the pop open medicine in the FAQ, if that doesn't help, it may need to go back to H&R for repair unless you want to fix the latch engagement yourself which is covered in the FAQ barrel fitting instructions. If you decide to send it back, give em a call and let em know the problem, have them cover shipping cost. ;)

how did the fired round stick in the chamber (with ripping the rim off) if you have an extractor and you opened and closed the action "a few times" to get it out. I thought the extractor was strictly a mechanical lever or cam type?....<><.... ???

That's another issue that will need H&R's attention if the extractor isn't working or is missing the rim for some reason. ???

So the extractor claw extended out past the rim without picking it up?

no when you opened it, it wouldnt open all the way and nothing would move until you worked it back and forth a few times. it has only happed 3 times so it could just need a good cleaning. the thing im worried about is the gun opening when its getting fired.

Are you sure it's an extractor? Does it normally throw the spent case out of the chamber, or does it just lift it out a little?....when it works right, that is! If it is an extractor which only lifts it out of the chamber a little, then it's defective and needs to be worked on by H&R.

Is this the one you're selling in the classifieds? ???

Which one of the underlugs in the pics looks like yours, if you don't mind?

Thx,

Tim

That's the early style extractor and apparently the reason why they switched to the later style of the top one, they must have had some problems with it such as yours. I've got 2 with that style, a 204 I bought in Oct '04 and a .22-250 fluted Ultra I bought a year ago. Is yours the fluted Ultra w/skeleton stock? You didn't state that in your ad. I don't think they offer the laminated Ultra Varmint in .22-250.

yep its the fluted thumbhole stock as they say it. is there suppose to be a spring or anything in there because when i have the barrel apart part of the extractor (the part that goes into the reciever part to make the extrator move) just flops around inside there?

I don't know, I can't tell what's in there, the newer style looks much simpler tho, and hopefully works better!  I haven't had any problems with either of mine......knock on wood!! If you send it in for repair, they'll probably put a new barrel on it, I don't think they remove underlugs, but they may have a conversion for it, dunno.
