SKS Ammo (Hogs)
« on: December 10, 2006, 07:59:29 AM »
I have a short barrelled (Paratrooper) SKS. I shoot about a 6" group at fifty yards using Russian ammo.
I would like to use it hog hunting but need advice picking proper ammo.
Can anyone recomend a good hard hitting accurate ammo?

Yup try the wolf 154gr ammo but try to find some chinese norinco 7,62x39 if you can there is still some around.  My norinco para at 100yds benchrested will shoot 1 1/2" to 2" groups if i do my part with iron sites using norinco ammo.  These little guns are way under estimated they are very accurate with the right ammo.

I have been thinking of putting a aimpoint or scope on it. That should help.
I have some Norinco 122 grain. stuff but I can't get it to group.

P.M.C.  123 grain Soft-point. In my opinion it is the best 7.62x39 on the market. Jacket is too thick on the wolf 154 grain Stuff and expansion is erratic if any. Penetration is excellent with the wolf ammo though .

Like mikey always tells me check your stock to see if the barreled assembly is fitted properly to it.  My scoped chinese sks will shoot under 1" groups using norinco ammo.  The only thing i did to all my guns was to put moly on the trigger sear and in the actions its a whole different gun then.  The trigger is like getting an expensive trigger job with just a lube.  I have heard the wolf 154gr is very accurate and they shoot good groups too.

I too have had good service from the P.M.C
ammo. I have some of the Wolf 154 grain but have not
used it on any game. How punishing is it on the action of an SKS?
Do you have a recoil buffer installed?
I was actually thinking of getting a barrel for My Handi-Rifle and
set it up just for that 154 grain wolf ammo! That would be a great
Heavy brush gun. Short and Handi  ;)

I was getting 3-4 inch groups with wolf 123gr.  I bought a kevlar stock, had my gunsmith put it in, he said it was a bear, but it now shoots much tighter, l only tested it at 50 yds but it is around an inch with the wolf ammo.
got some umc fmj and it is tighter still.
