SB2 Ultra Handi in 223
« on: December 09, 2006, 02:17:02 PM »
Hey guys,

I wanted to ask you all what you thought about the .223 handi.  I came across one that is used at the gun shop today.  It is the Ultra with the scope base and hammer extension and as I said it's a .223.  I already have a Remington .223 bolt gun and I don't really need another .223 but I had thought about selling the 700 off anyway and I already have all the brass and reloading components for the .223.  I want to get a 45-70 but no place that I looked have one.  I came across the Ultra in the used rack and I have to say that if it was used it wasn't used much.  The trigger on the thing can only be decribed as awsome.  Are the .223's good shooters?  I will end up with a 45-70 but I think I'll just end up sending a frame off and having a barrel fitted.  I can pick this up for $200.00.  What do you guys think?

HELLO wolfgang Welcome to the wonderful world of Handi-holics.
I would grab that 223 Uitra, My Son &I both have the Ultras.
both shot great At least as well as we can. Then you can send action to
 H&R/NEF for 45-70 barrel ( every body needs a 45-70 or B.C.
 Just My 2 cents Marv.

I agree wholeheartedly with Marv, thats a great gun for a good price. The 45-70 barrel just cries out to be added to it!!!....<><.... :)

That sounds like a reasonable deal, but you might want to check the date of mfr just in case you might want to put a high pressure barrel on it someday, it would need to be an HN or later, just so ya know up front. It's kinda disappointing when a person finds that out after the fact. It wouldn't be a problem for the .45-70 barrel though as long as it's an HB or later.

Two thumbs up for the .223.  I have one each in a Handi and Ultra.  Both are great shooters and fun.  Add me to the list with MSP and Marv, the .45-70 Handi is a must have! :)

I've had a bull barrel .223 handi for several years now, its my coyote rifle. I also have a ultra in 25-06 . Both are very accurate , and I love them. The only thing is the 06 , is so dang loud. LOL. But, you can really reach out and touch them with it.

Well I guess I screwed up.  My wife just called me and had driven over to the gun shop I frequent and she had listened to me talk about the rifle and then she asked why I didn't buy it.  I told her I wanted to ask a few questions about it here first and then I had also thought that at this time of year I would be better served keeping my money in my pocket and putting it toward Christmas stuff for the kids and her as she does do alot around here and gets very little for herself.  Well....as I said, she just called and said she had to let the cat out of the bag as she was going to buy me that rifle and after driving over there she found out that it had already been sold :'(.  I didn't think too much about leaving it there because it seems that the store does most of its business with higher end stuff and people tend to overlook the used racks.  I figured it would be there until after the holidays since its kind of cold in Ohio right now to be out looking for groundhogs to shoot!.  I was going to ask this question anyway so I might as well still do so since I'm sure that this was not the only rifle of that model that H&R has made.  I guess my concern in getting one is the problems I've encountered with the .44 Mag Handi.  I really don't want to end up with another rifle that strings its shots or has wild fliers all over the place.  Have these types of thing been a problem with the .223 Ultra?  Also, like I have said before I really love the concept of this light little single shot rifle set up and I am probably going to end up with at least a 45-70 barrel stuck on it as well as possibly others in the future.  I just have to get past being gunshy about all the accuracy issues faced with the .44.

At Walmart, they're still $199.XX for wood stocked, $210 for syn stocked Handis and $240 for laminated Ultras, $282 for the fluted Ultra. From all reports, Gander sells em for the same price or less. Sportsman's Warehouse sells the lam Ultras for $240, Handis for $220, dunno about the fluted, never priced them there. BiMart here in town has a syn stock Handi .223 w/22" standard contour barrel on the shelf right now for $209.99, that's their regular price, not on sale. They had a wood stocked bull barrel .204 Ruger up until a couple weeks ago for $199.99, but some lucky Joe bought it, I was kinda glad to see it gone, it had some nice fiddleback in the stock, if they hadn't bought it, I may not have been able to hold out any longer, every time I saw it, it said BUY ME!!! ;D
