What plate metal is generally used to make rams and can you make five rams from a 4'x8' sheet?

Troy

ASTM A-514 steel with a Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) of 235 to 293 BHN  is the recommended steel. Some trade names are Jolloy AR-320 from Jones and Loughlin Steel, X-A-R-15 from Republic Steel, T-1 type A321 from U.S.Steel. The recommended welding rod is E-110XX or E-120XX. For the Chicken and pig .5"; .375" for the ram and turkey

I have used mild steel up to .750 thick but it takes a beating and needs yearly replacing. HTH

The only thing I have been able to find up here in Canada that people have actually heard of is QT 100.

This type of steel is used in the heavy equipment industry, road graders, bulldozers ect. See if you have a business near-by that repairs such equipment ,they will know about this type of steel. The BHN is the key factor for choosing this type of steet.

If the targets are for your own use and you will be using lead bullets, mild steel about 1/2" thick will work. If the targets are going to be at a public range and being shot at with jacketed bullets they don't last long. At our range the hangers are made from 1" mild steel and are replaced yearly.
