Longhorn mount?
« on: July 16, 2006, 07:25:00 AM »
Hi All
This is my first post on this forum; I'm usually on the NEf centerfire forum a lot so forgive me if I'm off-topic here.

A couple of weeks ago My varmint hunting partner and I were in Montana for our yearly prarie dog safari.  I've always wanted a set of longhorns, for a hood ornament and one night in a saloon we were talking with the owner, who said he knew of someone who had a pair of horns mounted that they wanted to get rid of.

So, the next day I went in search of help in mounting my "prize".  Long story short, the mount to my hood went well until I slammed it shut the first time which was when I found out that the "solid" mounting of the horns was anything but because the right-hand horn vidsibly shifted when the hood met the latch.

So now I'm back home and I'm considering how these magnificent horns can be mounted so that they can survive on the hood of my pickup truck.

I'm thinking of filling the horns' first few inches deep on the open end with fiberglass resin/hardner and embedding a piece of threaded rod in the epoxy, then screwing the t-rod into a suitable base material, wrapping it on theoutside with leather, and then fixing this to a base which I can then mount to the hood of my pickup(hopefully using the same holes we drilled into the hood in montana)

If you think this sounds crazy, you should hear what my wife has to say but since this is my rig, well you can guess the rest.

Any suggestions?

Wow! Now that is an idea.  My Dad has a pair he got about 35 years ago in texas. They are about 7' wide, but I don't think he's willing to part with them.  I would think that it would be quite a challenge to get those things to stay up there.  Maybe contact Boss Hogg down in Hazzard.

C'mon guys I need some help here!

The original mount was a length of what appears to be fence post, tapered on each end using a dull hatchet.  The horns were then pressed onto this "dowell" and tacked in place using small nails or brads; then this lashup was wrapped with leather strips fastened to the wood with upholstery tacks.  This was then nailed to a short piece of 1x4 pine board and then hung on the wall for however many years until it was sold to the sucker(me) as being a solid mount.

Each horn is about 37" long; the whole thing was just under 6 feet long and looked GREAT on the hood of my 1989 ford F250, until I closed the hood the first time.  Sure glad it didn't happen going down the road!!

Does fiberglass expand when it hardens?  I'd like to reinforce the horn for a few inches at their bases so that I can use some really long Stainless steel u-bolts to keep them on the base I make for them; I'll most likely cast the base in resin/hardner with elevator bolts cast into it to attach it to the hood.

I've got a set of bull horns on the grill of my truck. There only 24"-30" wide. The horns are a set of horns off my great, great grandfathers bull. I have no idea how long they have been mounted, or how there are. I'm better they are done in some what the same way yours are. I like mine down on my grill, so there do not block my site. Plus I think this way they would not get the shock they would being mounted on the hood. They are on my 95' GMC 1500 btw. I've had them on there for two years now, and have had no problems. LOL I zip tied them to the grill for the complete hillbilly look.
