why i don't guide hunters
« on: October 11, 2003, 03:07:05 PM »
now i know why i am not a guide, coyotes 8 hunters 0. took my two nephews and their 14 year old daughter out calling. it was their first time, all are experianced deer hunters. they found out real quick this isn't sitting in a blind in texas taking target pracice at deer.
i did my best to get a coyote for the 14 year old but after leaving the safety on while one posed for her at 90 yards, the next one almost left foot prints all over her at 20 yards.
need less to say all had a good time, two or three weeks i'll go back and get them.

taking young ones out hunting is a good thing.  be patient.   success is great; the time spent with them is what really matters.

Willy !!  We were all 14 at one time, enjoy their youth while you can, you should expect it to be a slow learning process for both of you to enjoy, take them back the next time a cover their slight errors b-4 getting set up as we all know each type of game we hunt is different and so are the type of hunters (called personality) they will adjust some as they mature as you have, enjoy life,be safe. :D   JIM

willy I'm a pro guide for geese, deer, moose, and am starting a coyote operation this winter, and a know from where you speak, two years ago i had a hunter within 75yds of a 200 class muley and the guy didn't shoot   after the buck left i asked what happened and his response was get this:    "I don't want to talk about it" :x     that just one of many  similar experiences, but in the same breath I got a dandy whitetail for my young cousin,  the first coyote for a fellow guide, and many other memoirable firsts. Plus I get to do something I've always wanted to do, and get paid to hunt   .as for the 14 year old girl, give her time and support and before you know it she'll be whacking the song-dogs way ahead of any the fellas. But a word of advice make it fun :P

she has talked of nothing else since going home, i should have taken her fox hunting instead of coyote. unfortunately they came to visit about a week early. i did send them home with a tape to call foxes with, we'll see how they do.

Sometimes the ones that get away are worth every bit of it ;D
My own son let out a startled yell once in his pre-teens on a close encounter...
Scared the heck out of that poor coyote ;D

Although I don't guide and have no desire to, I do take many novice hunters/shooters out for coyotes/prairie dogs and plains game. If you are easily frustrated it is definitely not for you. Many times I see the same mistakes, regardless of age and just chalk it up to experience (or lack there of).
Safeties left on
ammo not chambered
poor close range shooting
make too much noise
can't sit still
can't see target
bad flinch
poor stalking skills
poor equipment
You name it and I've seen it. But when I was 14 I am sure I made all the same mistakes (probably some of them I still make at 50).

Reminds me of a time we were doing a deer drive and pushed I think it was 6 coyotes between my brother and the river, about 5 yds.  He missed and missed and missed some more reloading once ( I think he shot 8 times w/ his 20g slug gun).  The guy next to him couldn't figure out what he was shooting at because he was basically aiming into the river, with a big spash after every shot.

Sometimes they surprise you.  I took this guy from Arkansas turkey hunting last spring at the very end of the season.  We set up where i'd seen several toms over the past few days and we could hear at least 1 tom fly down in our field.  After 30 minutes of listening to this tom just gobble his head off just out of sight he shut up.  I go to peak out and see what happened and he touches my leg.  The turkey is literally 10 feet away, just about to come around the tree.  That tom gets even with us and spooks, spins, and runs.  That guy leaned forward and rolled that turkey in 1/10 of a second.  99 out of 100 guys would not have made that shot, and most wouldn't have even gotten it off.

I have been the fortunate one that seems to have taken most of my younger family into the woods for the first time hunting. Nephews, sons, wife, friends of son and nephews. Deer hunting, bird hunting, skeet shooting, most definetly bow hunting. I remember the magic in their eyes better than I remember some of my biggest game success's. One thing to remember..... someday you will be the one they take out to go hunting.  They willbe talking about how your wheelchair squeaked to much or how the smell of ben gay  sscared the deer away or how you could not stop passing gas...............  yeaa it is special, all of it.
Praise to you for taking them out!!  everyone needs to do their part to keep this hunting and firearm freedom free.

I agree with all that has been said!

I have two nephews who want to hunt with me this year and I am looking forward to teaching them, and just maybe they will get some game too.

I even have the wife interested in spring turkey hunting...we will see.
