7-30 Waters TC takes deer

Last weekend I managed to take a 3 1/2 year old 6 point deer, 140 lbs, 9" wide 13" tall, at 52  yds with the 120 gr Nosler BT. It was a morning hunt and this 6 point had already ran off an 8 point and was in the process of convincing a 5 point to leave the area when I took the broad side lung shot. I was in an open tri-pod stand 10 feet off the ground in small live oaks and cedars. Used a scope on 4 power, due to 53 year old eyes. Deer ran 40 yds fell and quickly expired. It was a clear cool moning in central/west Texas and a great day to be out hunting. Next time I plan to take the 35 Rem. TC or the Freedom Arms 454.

ive shot a few with mine and that same bullet and it allways did an excellent job. Congradualations

You owe it to yourself to try the 130gr SSP by Sierra (I think).  I've had better results with it than the 120 Nosler.  I don't like deer that run anywhere after being shot.  The ones I've shot with the 120 Nosler all ran.  All but one of the 130 SSP deer fell in their tracks, of which one was dropped at 156 yds.

Me too BUT Sierra has discontinued that bullet and stocks have been depleted. If you find any at a retail outlet buy them, if you don't want them I'd love them.

looking at my records ive only shot 4 whitetails with the 120 nosler but all have dropped within one leap.

40 yards isn't that far to worry.  I know of several occassions where a deer's lungs have had a very large hole punched through both of them and the silly thing run about 100 yards-even though it was dead it didn't know it yet.

I wasn't worried about that distance. I have shot deer with many different weapons and most ran a short distance. I have shot 2 with the 35 Rem through the lungs and both dropped. I shot one with 7TCU and he made it out of sight with no visible sign of an impact at the shot and no external blood, but a short look produced him. He made it about 35 yards. Without hitting major bone, most deer I have shot  with a rifle  go just as far or more. Good hunting and thanks for a place to discuss shooting and hunting. Ken.

Thanks for the heads up about discontinuing the Sierra 130 gr single shot pistol bullets . I have a box but I will check the local stores for more .

When I first got my 7-30 I came here for advise on loads and took the good reports to heart on the Sierra 130's. I have taken seven deer so far and they have all gone down immediately or in just a short distance.

I just checked my ammo locker and I have 100 loaded rounds and 44 new bullets. I don't know what I will go to when they run out. I never could find the sierra 130 locally and always bought off the internet anyway so the chance of finding any in a gun shop around here is probably pretty slim.

I may have to try the Noslers next.
