Scope a Lyman GPR
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:31:20 PM »
Merry Christmas to all! I know I may be treddin on thin ice here, in spite of the fact that Civil War snipers used tubes on their frontloaders, but has anyone put a scope on this rifle, and what kind of hairpulling did you have to go thru to get the combo to do what you wanted it to. Reason I ask is I'd like the advantage at dawn & dusk that iron sights don't give you, even with a fiber-optic front, which I already have. I got a set of mounts & rings from an outfit in Pennsylvania that clamps on to my barrel, but it just wouldn't stay put on discharge.....drove me about crazy. I've got a Bushnell Legend 3-9X50 Low-light scope, a real good optical piece, that I think would work, if I could just mount it SECURELY, & with the proper amount of eye relief. That's my story & I'm stickin to it, & thanx for sharin your experiences in this endeavor, if any. JD45

Are you talking about the mount that Dixie sells that is a magnet/set screw mount that fits on octagon barrels? They sell for about 40 bucks. I was thinking about getting one for my 45/70 but may not if that is the mount you are talking about????????
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I picked up a clamp on mount at a gun show yesterday. I am getting older and am worried about not seeing good enough in a few years, so I picked it up just in case. I don't think it has a magnet, just 3 allen screws to clamp it tight.

jh, no it's not Dixie's.............it's the one with just the allen screws to clamp it to the octagon barrels' flats & it don't work worth a damn! I think I'm gonna haveta get my d'd & t'd to hold it in place. JD45

The Dixie one has magnets and set screws and according to them they shot it with 90 grain powder charges and it did not move. Do not know if that is hype or not I wish I knew some one who tried one before I buy one. I could see where powerfull magnets and set screws would maybe keep it from moving.

jh, I took a look at the one on Dixie's website, and at mine, and it's the same one, after all. I just got mine directly from the manufacturer in PA............anyway, it didn't hold the scope to the barrel. JD45

So yours does not have magnets?????????? Or Does???????? From the impression I got from reading the ad it is a snug fit for your barrel to start with and the magnets and set screws hold it to the barrel. I think they only off two sizes 15/16 and One Inch  The brand name is Quickee Scope Mount. Same one?

Yes jh, it's the Quik-Kee.........I just forgot about the magnets. I believe I tested it with my standard load of 85grs of Hodgdon's 777 under the Hornady Great Plains 385gr HP conical. I don't know, maybe I ought to plat with it some more before I take it to a 'smith & have him bore holes in my barrel. I just remember my initial experience with it was definately NOT encouraging. Maybe I ought to call the manufacturer. JD45
