Bought a 760 Gamemaster
« on: December 01, 2006, 05:59:00 PM »
I found a nice clean one in .308.  Now I have to decide on the scope. Should I put the 3X9 Leupold Rifleman, or the  2X7 Rifleman that I have on it???  This one is the rifle not the carbine.  The SN is B69653XX, any idea when it was made?

Personally I would not scope it at all. I had one in 30-06 and used the open sights, it was just alot of fun to shoot as well as being really light.

It came with a scope base, Weaver rings, and a nice looking Tasco 2.5 fixed power scope.  The factory sights are still on it.  I like Remington factory sights.  A rear peep would be cool.

It looks like it was made in January of 1969.

A Lyman 66R reciever sight would be cool.  I wonder how much it would cost to have the holes drilled and tapped?  Is the 66R the sight the Benoits used?

My M760 wore a William Reciever sight for a period of time.  A good sight.

Swampman discribe the area you hunt. If you hunt swamps it is my assumption that your shots are very short range.  And you experience a lot of wet weather.  In that case a peep sight is a good option.  At or before WWII most military rifles were going away from a notch "v" sight and the peep became the standard.  I found the peep to be faster then the factor sight.

I switched to a scope because I might kick a buck out at 10 yards in heavy brush or get a 200 yards shot across an Arroyo on the same hunt.  I made sure the scope was focus and spent a fair amount of time shouldering the empty rifle and sighting on light switchs.  Closes shot with a scope was about 10 yards and a running buck.  Practice paid off.

Most shots are close but ocassionally we hunt from shooting houses, and will have some fairly long shots.  I have a Model 700 in .308 that I probably use for that type of work.

I had one that I bought in 1970, put a Williams receiver sight on it. and didn't need to drill any holes. I'd use the 2x7 scope, to help hold down the weight, a 760 ain't exactly a lightweight. Mine was a .270, and it would still keep all the shots on an 8" gong at 300 yards.

Me too.

Mine is a limited edition 7600 in .25-06 with maple stocks.  It's not here yet.

Look forward to it.

I wish mine was the carbine.  I put the 2X7 on it and it looks nice.
