Smith & Wesson buys New Hampshire gun maker

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Smith and Wesson is taking a shot at the hunting market.
The Springfield-based company says it is buying Thompson/Center Arms -- a Rochester, New Hampshire-based company that specializes in hunting rifles.

The one hundred (m) million dollar cash deal is expected to close early next month.

Thompson/Center Arms is known for making muzzleloaders and rimfire rifles.

Shares of Smith and Wesson Holding Corporation rose as much as six-point-four percent in early trading today on the Nasdaq. Friday's closing price was 10-dollars-27-cents.

Thompson/Center Arms is privately held.

I won't buy another T/C now. It makes me ashamed to own the ones I do.

Good, maybe you will put them up for sale here so all of us can enjoy them.

I don't think it is a bad move, S&W makes some great guns and I truly believe S&W will let the T/C plant run as always.

I can't believe some guys are acting like the world has come to an end.  ::)

I still remember when S+W sold American gun owners down the river during the Clinton administation. I've never bought a S+W since and I never will. To that I now add T/C.

Good, but don't think everyone is going to follow you. I still buy S&W and will continue to as well as T/C.  ;D

If T/C is allowed to run independently, all could be well.  But my guess is S&W will want their hands in everything and we could see an end to the most innovative MLs on the market.

It could be ok, but I'm not on the optimistic side.

I would not go that far. I have never had a problem with S&W.  I am seeing a lot of chicken little syndrome here.

It's not just here. Everyone is talking about it. Very little of it is good.

If S&W purchased T/C for such a small price (relatively) I would guess that T/C was in trouble and would go the way of Austin Halleck in a couple of years anyway.  S&W may be the only thing that saves Thompson Center.  I've never had a problem with any of my four S&W handguns.  If I remember correctly the company that owned S&W during the Clinton admin. was different than the conmpany that owns them now.

I owned a model 29T and out of the two years I owned it,it was at the factory getting repaired, more than it was at home. I shot silhouette competion with it. It was allways, the loads are too hot,or you shoot it too often ???. And there was allways a large labor, and parts ticket with it every time. You won't have to worry about them replacing anything on the gun for free,it won't happen. >:(

SDS-Gen if memory serves you are correct.  Think it was actually owned by a British Company back then and now it is owned and/or operated by a couple of Americans.

By all recent entries in the S&W lineup that I have seen they are trying really hard to bring the Company back to pre Clinton era quality IMO.  Still hope the TC's continue to look like TCs though.

AMF did much to hinder the reliability of HD's, but they were very good at leaking lube before bowling balls ever got involved in that equation... since remedied.

I own several S&W guns and the guns are of high quality.. So I believe S&W will be a benefit to T/C. But my main question is; Is Jim Shockey going to still use T/C guns?  ;D

Jim Shockey made his money with Knight, most of us used the T/C Encores while he was playing with the Knight M/L's. I don't think we as T/C owner would miss anything if he went back to Knight.  :D ;)

But I am thinking the same as you. I think S&W will do good for T/C, not that there was anything wrong with T/C in the first place. I love both companies.  ;D

Time will tell how it all works out.

Maybe with S&W on board T/C will get thier 460 barrles to hit past 25yds. I have two other friedns with same problem barrles. If S&W Changes anything I have enought T/Cs to keep me happy. If S&W hurts them wich I dought by older Barrles.

I'll be faintly interested in the new price structure. Haven't purchased in the past. Too rich for me!
