muskrats under ice?
« on: December 03, 2006, 11:42:18 AM »
My open water muskrat trapping is over for now. I'm going to try to trap them under the ice. Any tips?

Try to get out on the first ice, clear ice allows you to see the bubble trails leading to their dens.110's,160's or colony traps can beset to take these rats.
My buddy Mike and I are now trapping rats in the huts. This is not allowed in all states--and great care must be taken to keep the huts from freezing up.
If I can be of any other help--please ask.

Walked out to check my ice rat trapping location. The ice is about 6" thick and is cloudy. Can't see much for bubble trails. I know they are there. In a few locations out away from the huts there are what i believe to be push ups. How do you go about trapping these. Back at the huts should I drill holes in the ice and feel around for their trails. Is this possible or am I wasteing my time.

Colony traps can be put right in front of the holes. If you are setting them in the runs--put them right in the bottom groove.
Colonies are very effective under the ice,it can become a chore ,once the ice gets several inches thick.
