Christmas Gift to Me
« on: December 21, 2006, 02:09:23 PM »
I saw this 30-06 Ultra Hunter on Gunbroker and hesitated.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=62786775

I e-mailed the seller and found that it's a 2005 HV receiver, and couldn't resist it for $200 + $20 shipping + $20 FFL fee on my end. I'll probably sell the laminate stocks and turn it into a 30-06 Survivor.

I like the Survivor buttstock + the slip-on Limbsaver with 12 ga magnum turkey loads, so I think the same combo might work for the 30-06.

You got a sweet deal on that. And the 30-06 is a classic. Every shooter needs one, or two, or.......

I agree. And this will be my first sporting 30-06. I have a M1903 Springfield and an Eddystone M1917, but for some reason have never had a 30-06 sporting rifle. I decided it was time to put a stop to that.

Same here, congrats!
I would take it for a test drive before you pull those lams off it. I understand you wanting something a little different in the Survivor set up, but all my best shooting Handis carry Laminates. I'm not saying the synthetics won't shoot for you, but the stronger lams are easy to work with, tough, and look great. Don't let the fact that they are wood, deter you from them. Yes they can scratch and dent, but they are toughter then you might think...

If you decide to get rid of those stocks, I would be interested in buying them off of you if they are reasonable enough in price.  Great deal by the way.

Below is a pic of my turkey gun. I figured I could just rob the stocks from it and sell the lams from the Ultra. Do any of you find that you get better accuracy with the lams? If so, I'm thinking it would be the forend, not the buttstock?

As far as weight and recoil, I don't have much hand strength, and with 12 ga magnum loads, my turkey gun would jump out of my hands with the standard pallet wood shotgun stocks. Even though the Survivor stocks are lighter, I can control the recoil better with the pistol grip. That's why I was planning to "Survivorize" the Ultra. The Limbsaver slip-on takes out some of the sting and gives me the correct length of pull with the short Survivor buttstock.

I might just keep the lams, though. I'll wait and see.

Since you seem to like the idea of the pistol grip area..Have you seen these types of NEF synthetics before...Here's a picture of one of Quickdtoo's in it...

The survivor needs a recoil pad put on it...this one doesn't...and it will still give you good hand support as well..

Just a thought..

Thanks, Mac, but I've already got the Survivor stocks and slip-on Sims pad, and I do like that setup. I suspect the Limbsaver works better than the pad on the varmint stock, though I guess you could take out one or both of the spacers on the varmint stock and then slip on the Limbsaver. Then you'd have two pads working for you!

BTW, here's a snapshot of my Pardner with the 20 ga Tracker II drilled and tapped for the factory mount, with Weaver high steel rings and a Leupold Vari-X IIc 3-9x40.
