New Marlin 1895 ?
« on: December 16, 2006, 01:28:51 PM »
I just got a new 1895 in 45-70 . The gun is really nice. I'm happy I bought it. I brought it home along with a box of factory ammo, Winchester 300 grain jacketed hollow points. These were the only factory loads at the store. I ran some some rounds through the action making sure everything worked ok, which it did. Is it normal for the cartridges to become a little scratched and dinged up from the loading and unloading process? I'm really excited about the new Marlin, I can't wait to shoot it. Thanks all.

Welcome...

Yes...it is quite normal for it to have a few scratches on them...It will in time stop doing it as much...but it will always leave some on it...Good Luck with it and let us know how it shoots for you..Your in for a real treat...In case it doesn't like the Winchesters...don't feel bad...My 1895 XLR doesn't do well with them...or the Remington 300 grainers...but does exceeding well with the Federal & Nosler 300 grainers...

I am sure you will like the 1895.  Mine has never seen a factory load.  Don’t know if you reload or not but mine changed from an OK shooter to something special when I changed from the trapdoor loads to the heavier Marlin loads.  The changed a two-inch group to a ‘same hole’ group with Remington HPs and an appropriate load of R-7.  I don’t know what the heavier loads will do for the Rem 405 SPs yet but as soon as I can get to the range I intend to find out. :D

Yep, they are great guns. I also bought a XLR back in October & it is a good shooter & a fun gun for sure.

I have owned one for years in 4570. Got my biggest buck with it. A very accurate rifle. I am planning on useing it for a cowboy action competition, a timed fire event involing steel targets at 100, 200 and 300 yards. I will take off the scope and add a peep sight for this. No point in letting this fine rifle get dusty.

bo....you're going to love it.I have used factory Remy 405 sp,which do very well. But,reloading is where it shines.Using Sierra 300 gr. jhp's over several different powders (RL-7,Varget,H-4198,IMR-4198) I found I like Varget and IMR-4198 best.I loaded Remy 405 sp's with Imr-4198 which I like best for them.......have fun.........Rick
