I'd recommend the Lohman calls. I hunt valley quail in California. Quails call to each other when they want to covey. This is particularly true in the morning and after you bust up a covey. Quail calls can indeed attract quails wanting to covey. Most of the time you listen for answering calls to know approximately where they are. I seem to hear much fewer quail calls or answereing quail calls in the afternoon.
