20 ga. slug barrel?
« on: April 13, 2003, 01:52:10 AM »
I am new here. I shoot an Encore 209-50 and am thinking of a 20 ga. rifled barrel and the Winchester saboted slug load. Can anyone tell me what to expect out of this rig? I live in PA where we shoot rifles but also hunt in NY where slugs or ML are required.

The one I have will shoot 3 inch groups at 100 yds with Lightfields.  I never tried the Winchester's.  Should be capable out to 150.  Recoil is not bad with 2 3/4's, I would think the 3 inch might be a little different.

My Encore will pierce the primers on 3 of 5 of the Lightfield slugs.  Best one I've found so far is Federal Premium 3" with the Barnes sabot slug. 4 shots in 1 7/8" the fifth opened the group to 4 1/8".   Second best is Federal Premium 5/8 oz 2 3/4" sabot 4 shots in 3" and 5 in 5".  These are 100 yd groups with a Leupold 3-9X scope at 9X.

I have 8 rounds of 2 3/4" Lightfields left it someone wants them.  $1 ea.   I paid $7 per 5.

My H&R Ultra slug hunter has problems with pierced primers with the Lightfields also. The Lightfields also failed miserably when the temp here in Ohio was 8 degrees. TONS of unburnt powder in the barrel, and missed the deer with 8 shots. Don't know where the bullets were going, but never even spooked the deer. ( 75 yards off of a bipod!!! )
