Bipods and Questions
« on: December 16, 2006, 11:32:21 AM »
I took my Ultra 223 to the range today for some fine tuning.  A friend offered to let me snap on his Harris bipod to the front sling stud.  I was a bit worried that it would have a big effect on the accuracy with the pressure being so close to the end of the forearm and I was positive I would get vertical strings.

WOW was I wrong!  I shot a beautiful group at 100 yards that was less than 3/4"   I was really pleased with the results.  I did not want to give it back!!

Now the questions...

Any bipod advice?
Mounting?  Is the front stud the proper place or is there a better way?
Brand?

Happy Holidays!

Bob

Harris is the best, but they also cost more.  Very happy with a cheaper brand. I had a cheaper brand the first time I went p-dog shooting, and I lost a boltthat holds in one of the arms.  I realise it was my mistake too, but I was not happy at the time.
As for mounting I have a synthetic stock and it doesn't work well on it, but my Gunsdtocks inc. forarm I have works excellent. I would think its more because that forearm is floated beter and the wood is more stiff than the synthetic.

I shoot with a bipod all the time at the range and my groups are good. I also practice shooting off of my shooting stix because that is how I shoot coyote hunting most of the time.

As for as which bipod to buy, I used to buy Harris but their prices jumped everytime I needed another one. I started buying the other brand (sorry, I can't think of the name right now) but I had to spray with flat black paint because they were too glossy. They have worked just as well for me. I have always used the front stud with no problems.

Stoney point rockmount? I think that is the one I have. I have to check for sure, Anyways it is identical to the harris for A LOT less. I have one each and cannot tell the difference side by side. Easy on and off so I only have the two. One to 23 inch extended and one to 13 inch extended.

I have a harris I bought many years ago, before price went out of sight.Use it all the time on synthetic stocked handi in 223.Have shot best groups shooting prone with sandbag rest under buttstock.Main thing to not do is over tighten when installing it,I use a penny and just snug it up and check it every once in awhile to make sure it isn't loose.

I use a cheaper version of the harris bipod made by shooters ridge I think. I also moved the swivel stud back closer to the hing so it was tighter to to forend and it fits alot better also shots great. Everyone says rest the gun as close to the hing as possible and it was better for me.

I should have mentioned my 223 is the ultra with a laminated stock set.

I use a Caldwell bipod on my Ultra 223.  Because of where the factory locates the sling swivel, it's hard to mount a bipod without having it wobble all over the place.  I got around that by filling the void between the fore-end and the bipod mount with epoxy putty (with a suitable release on both pieces.)  The result is a little wedge that fills the space and keeps everything solid, but which I can remove to use the bipod on other rifles.
