Super 16 Barrel Question
« on: December 16, 2006, 08:51:11 AM »
What caliber's were the Super 16 Barrels offered in?

What forend fits?  (I think it's a Carbine)

Do they have the same taper as the 21" Carbine Tapered?

I think I would like one.  22LR is an obvious choice, but I don't need that.

Did they come in 7-30 Waters or 30-30?  And how did these perform.  Particularly the 30-30 with factory ammo?

I'm not opposed to ordering a custom barrel from Fox Ridge, if it's tapered and lightweight.  If I did that, I'd probably go ahead and go 18".

I used to collect these barrels and had them in 22LR, 22Mag, 223, 7-30 Waters, 30/30, 35 Rem, 44 Mag, 45/410.  My son still has the 22 Mag.  I never had a 22 Hornet, but I’m sure they were offered.

It was the standard forend for the carbine tapered barrel.

150 gr Remington 30/30 factory ammo did 2270 fps.  I only shot it for groups as a pistol with the open sights at 25 yds.
120 gr Federal 7-30 factory ammo did 2660 fps and 2 1/8" groups at 100 yds.  My handloaded 120 gr Hornady SSP loads did 2500 fps and 1 ½" groups.  Scope was a  1 ¾-5X.

I have one in 7 x 30 waters in Stainless. Its very accurate and a pleasure to carry when hunting.  I have only killed a large doe and a coyote with it.  I had one in 414 Super mag, but had to send it back twice (they exchanged it for a different caliber in the 23" bull barrel) after the screw studs kept being pulled out due to recoil.  I really enjoyed that barrel..would be my choice for hogs or close brush hunting for whitetails.  I will probably order another 414 this time in a bull barrel configeration to allow more metal for the forearm studs.

I believe the super 16 in 45-70 uses the same forend as the normal 14" pistol barrels.

Correct, the Super 16 in .45-70 is a full bull barrel like the Super 14 and takes the same 2-screw forend.    Mine is chambered to .45-70; it is very handy, but recoil with 400 grain bullets at 1400 fps is pretty rough even with laminated rifle stocks and the brake.  I use BlueDot powder in reduced velocity 300-grain loads for low recoil but 'adequalte' power.   Much more pleasant!  :o
