I owe Trotterlg an Apology!!
« on: December 19, 2006, 06:33:20 PM »
I learned something today(what's new! ::)) that has puzzled me for quite a while. Larry challenged me on the size of the Handi hinge pin and I stood by what I knew to be true, that the hinge pin measures .370" in diameter, but he measured it at .375".  I recently bought a digital caliper from Sinclair and measured the hinge pin on a bunch of Handis today and they all came out at .375", just as Larry said they measured. My Lyman caliper still says they measure .370" but it measures thinner material the same as the digital, so I was wrong and wanted to apologize to Larry and anyone else that I led astray for my error. :-[

Sorry fellas, I guess it's kinda like having a tried and true scope that lets ya down! :-\

It takes a BIG man to admit when he's wrong. And even more especially among a bunch of other men, and even more than that after a debate like took place over this subject. You just excelled to a new level of respect from me Tim.

I totally agree with all of the above comments. However, this is a failed measuring device issue. Could this mean there are more inaccurate calipers that us reloaders are using? If so, where would one get his calipers calibrated? I am not over-reacting nor excited. I just thought this "might" be an issue ... hopefully not.

quick ... you are the kind of man my father was. My father believed in total honesty and he said it could very well be painful at times.

I have been useing a dail caliper, My son just gave me
digital Caliper for Birthday this week, When this came up
with you I measured one of mine with both,
dail = .371 didital = .375 other things are off about same amount.

OK guys here is the question, which is correct? Each stands as good a chance as the other of being the correct measurement. As in all measuring there is the possibility (probability) of some small discrepancy between different measuring instruments, what we hope for is that difference is not critical. What can be be important is to use the same measuring tool for critical areas of the same job.....<><....  ;)

Good advice, MSP!! I put the Lyman caliper in the kitchen tool drawer, it's been relegated to less critical measuring duty!! :D

Thanks Marv!

You're looking at it wrong Tim, you didn't make a mistake, your tool let you down.  8)

Yes, that's true Bill, but my mistake was being stubborn and not doubting the tool.    ....being let down by their tools seems to be a problem for a lot of men as they get older! :-[

I never doubted you were measuring the pin and reading what the tool said.  I had to measure it with both a Micrometer and my digital calipers just to make sure that I wasn't the person with the bad measuring tool.  At least we all know the correct answer for "what is the hinge pin diameter" question now.  Larry

I think ( there you go thinking ) That the hinge pin is 3/8 in or .375"
 My 2 cents. Marv.

Since we're on the topic, perhaps some of you can illuminate this scrap from my memory. Back when I worked in a plastics shop, we used to do parts dimension checks with digital calipers. They used to tell us: "If you open 'em up past an inch, close it all the way and zero it before you take a smaller measurement again." The QC lady also hated when people opened 'em up wide, because she said they'd need to be re-calibrated.

Does this make sense to anyone?

In machine shops calipers are usually relegated to lesser measuring jobs.  A mike will read better.  If you need the thin blades, get something for a "standard" like a 3/8 dowel pin (or a genuine gage pin), mike it, then measure it with the calipers at the same pressure and the same place on the jaws (they will spring and read different the further out you get).  Then you can find the deviation and allow for it.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you
