which powder and bullet combo. i would like to stay at 270 to 300 grain bullet. what powder do most of you guys have the best luck with.

If you don't have a good reloading manual you need to acquire one before attempting to load for this (or any other) cartridge.  Those are the only loads you should trust until you have PLENTY of experience reloading for and firing your gun.

I use Lil'Gun powder and a Hornady 300 XTP/MAG bullet in my Ruger SRH.
Took two deer with this combo last year and it performed great.

www.ebay.com look for a compendium of 454 loads in a book for $19 or so.  Search for 454 Casull and wander through the results.

I would look at the following web pages:
 alliant smokeless, hogdon smokeless, AA smokeless.
All these manufactures have a free reloading guide to get you started with a safe starting load with which to work up with.
I like AA#9 and H4227 with 280-300g bullets hardcast. I've used H110 before, but I think it is unecessary.

I use H110 for my 454 Casull. The best advice is to get the reloading manual for the bullets you choose to use. I have 7 reloading manuals, you can never have to many.

Also what works in my gun may not perform as well in your gun. You will have to try different powders and bullets.

W296 and a 300 grain XTP-Mag in my Freedom Arms.  Makes the deer do neat acrobatic tricks. ;D

You may want to try the Sierra 300 grain bullet. I have found it is a good one in the 454. I have settled on 27.7 grains of H-110. The Sierra manual shows a velocity of 1450 out of a 7.5 inch barrell. That is plenty for me. The older I get the less I find I want to shoot the maxium loadings.
