My First Black Bear
« on: May 17, 2003, 10:22:30 AM »
I finally got my first Alaskan big game animal, a black bear on the Kenai Peninsula.  I was driving down the Kenai to glass near Cooper Landing.  I saw a black dot on a hillside so I stopped and glassed -- bear!!!  I managed to get 232 yds (lasered) from it, with the bear on the other side of the river/gorge, and shot her behind the shoulder with my 338.  She spun around and ran no more than 20 yds before dropping for good.

I picked what at the time seemed like good landmarks and hiked down to a river crossing.  Note -- if the water looks knee deep...it'll be crotch deep.  Note -- Gortex boots do not keep water out in crotch deep water...they do, however, keep it in.  I looked for the bear on that steep hillside for a good two hours with no luck.  Crossed the river again...which was much colder without the previous adrenalin rush.  I called a couple fellas (young fellas) from work and they agreed to pack the bear out while I guided them from across the canyon (Cabela's gift certificates comin' their way, I figure).

Bear's now at the taxidermists and the meat's at the processor.  I tried some meat last night; pan fried with country gravy and it was just fine.

Off on the Susitna tomorrow for early King's with my son on his tenth birthday.

Vital Stats:
Hide squared 5ft, 10" (no, I did not wipe the milk of it's mouth before the pics)
Skull measured 16" and 13/16"
Sow

Hill in the background is where I shot it

These are the two guys from work who packed the bear out for me.  The one on the left added 40 lbs of water to his pack just to get in shape for sheep guiding.

Guy on the left (sheep guide) called this morning.  We measured length yeterday at 48" plus 22" (on a 48" tape)...and "re-added"....to 5'10"...not the original 5' we thought -- I know it's supposed to be length + width / 2 but we couldn't even add

Matt,
great choice of weapons...choice of locations...and one fine bear!
Wish I could have "fellows" pack mine out for me   :) That valley and hill looks so familier to me...but I'm not going to ask. You very likely might want to scope it out for a fall blackie as well!
Again, congrats Matt on a job well done. Remember, time to get the fall hunt application out for other critters if you haven't already!
best,
bhtr

Thanks guys.  I'm sure please to know I'll leave Alaska in a year with somethin' on the wall to remember her by...though I do hope to come back in a few years for a hunt or two.

Bearhuntr, Del, and Daveinthebush -- I really appreciate the hospitality.  Both of you have already shown me a some of Alaska -- over the phone and on a boat.  What a great state!!!

DennisB -- I took someone's advice and posted the bear story with IronKnees for his Sep/Oct bear e-zine issue.

Longwinters -- the boy had a great birthday, but not fishing.  The fella we were going with hadn't done anything with his boat since he put it away last year soooooo it didn't start (dead battery, cut hose that he forgot about).  Good news is that when you're 10-years-old dad can buy some Legos and make everything alright again.

Good Job Matt!
Glad to hear that you didn't give up and you got your bear!!  Looks like a nice hide and I'm sure the trophy on the wall will bring back many good memories.  Good luck fishing this summer and hunting this coming fall.  Del

Matt Congrats,  That's going to be a great trophy and worth a story or two around the wood stove.  I can't wait to see it in person.  Sounds like it was a great shot too.
Now what's this about crossing a river and the water was a tad cold and crotch high.  Now that takes some "testicular fortatude", especially to do it twice.

Best regards, be safe, and keep your powder dry!
Thanks Old Moss

Weren't much choice as I saw it Old Moss.  Crossed the crick once...and had to git back.  Dave's right though -- ain't but one water temp in Alaska -- COLD!!!

Takin' my first sergeant bear huntin' after work tomorrow.  He's retiring next month after 20+ years service and really wants that blackie.  Gonna miss that crusty ol' fart when he retires!!!

Wife agreed to go campin' this weekend so it's off to the Kenai again.  Figurin' to find a spot alongside a stream or lake.  Wife, kids, dog, guns, campfire....it's gonna be fun.

Past Cooper Center, there is a lake, Jean Lake(?).  State campground, outhouse, pretty lake. Left hand side.  Salmon in lake, check regs.!!! No fees I think and at the west end of the lake a little pull off down a bank.  No toilet though.

Good luck!

HI Matt
Your working on that sourdoughe status mghty quick.
Thats a fine bear ya have there mighty fine. There a nice lake
in The cooper landing area as you go across the kenai lake bridge
heading toward Soldotna there on the left hand side after crossig the
bridge is a road called Snug Harbour take it and follow it up to
COOPERS LAKE its a treeline and is a great mountain lake have
taken many bear from there your wife will enjoy the view and not many
people at all.The lake also has Rainbow trout and I have taken a fair
amount of Moose from the area as well. This lake is over looked by a lot
of tourist and hunters but it has a really good trail system around it.
Hope this helps ya.
