.58 huntsman?
« on: December 02, 2006, 01:04:58 AM »
I was at the gun shop locally and he got the brush out of my barrel. But while waiting I saw a .58 caliberHuntsman. I didn't know that gun came in that configuration. He has it for sale with scope for less than 300 dollars. Has anyone heard of this or was I reading the barrel wrong. He doesn't sell balls or sabots in that size and I have never seen them in this size either. Just thought it was a neat thing to see.

I don't know what the rate of twist is on the Huntsman. But if it is a round ball twist, you can buy ammo for it, and it is cheap.
The .58 round ball is a formidable hunting slug.
Aim small don't miss.

There was a 58 caliber Huntsman made years back. Do you know the what type of breach plug it has? The reason for knowing is some of the older Huntsman had push in breach plugs ( can be dangerous if you had a shot hang up and you opened the reciever to soon) But Hubbards has replacement plugs. Yes, the 58 cal. can be a very effedctive!

Apparently the .58 was put out with a strange rate of twist that did not work out so well which is probably why they discontinued it. I was interested in one but was informed by another poster that the gun is difficult to find a load for it that will work.

My father and uncle have a few H&R huntsmans in 58 and are always on the look out for another.  They use 58cal round balls with 125gr of real blackpowder with great groupings.  It is hard to get them the powder sometimes, only two places in Michigan carry it on hand :o  I was told that the huntsman 58's were discontinued because a person was killed with a hangfire.  He had a 58 with the slide in breechplug that was held with a o-ring.  The gun didn't fire, when he opened the barrel it fired!  The ball was heavier than the breech plug, the plug shot out and killed the man.  The ones that my father and uncle use is the threaded plug.  We found some conversion nipples that took the no.11 caps out and are now using 209 shotgun primers.  I know they are collectable and are hard to find, but $300 seems pretty high for one.  It took me two years to find one for my father. Does it have a high dollar scope?  I have seen them sold on gunbroker for $150-160 in good shape.  If you think about it, they were the first in-line.  It seemed to be ahead of its time.  Unclecheech were did you see that 58??  My uncle might by it anyways, he has money to spend ;D

Waco gun sales in Wayland, MI. Small place, been there for many years. Decent scope, can't remember the make, lens caps. The forward brass ring on the forearm was movable (as I shouldered my hand slid down the forarm moving the ring, which semed loose at the start). I looked at many guns that day, and I may have misquoted the price now that I see what I posted :-[Sorry for that. I do not work for them or get paid by them. I utilize their services once in a great while.

Thanks for the post!  I am from Michigan also.  How has this deer season been for you?  It has been terrible for me.  Have not seen anything worth using a bullet for yet.  Do you know their hours?  I might head over there on Saturday or Sunday if they are open.  Thanks!

horrible season, nothing seen. Opening day came over a small hill and crossing the road we were walking on, a herd of 20-30 does crossed from the game area to the golf course. I did not get a public doe cvard this year, otherwise there would have been venison in the freezer. Hopefully I can get out for a last hurrah with the bow this week. the hunstman was sold, hope it was you.
