« on: February 08, 2007, 02:07:12 PM »
You dont hear much about these rifles . What are your opinions on the weatherby DGR rifles in 416 and 460 weatherby for africa. And how about the 416 for the big bears?

Overpriced and overpowered.  Out of the, what are there, 5 types of 416s now?  The weatherby is the most expensive... and any other 416 will take care of the biggest of bear with no problem.  the 460 gives tales of shoulders actually coming off the body to go and crawl under a rock and hide to not have to deal with the reciol again.  If you want 416, just get a rigby.  If you want to go to africa, get a .458 lott.  That way your rifle wont beat your wallet out of your pants.

I still wouldnt mind having a .460 just to say I have it though.   ;D

Corbanzo, its not for me i have already decided to buy a 458 Lott in maybe the ruger 77 magnum or, the cz american safari, but i am just wondering why you dont hear much about the weatherbys , there must be a reason .I can see how the pressure levels might  be to high in hot climates , and might cause problems but you just dont hear much about them .

Mostly its cause there arent that many out there.  There are much more pleasureable and cost efficient guns which will do the same job.  the only thing I coudl think of where you really NEED 8000ftlbs of energy to knock down would be a armored vehicle  ;D

It seems like there are a lof of other large ones (such as the nitros) which have found their place with a lot of shooters, somewhere I guess the 460 never got...  So I guess that would be asking the same question as you are, why?

over priced junk in my book! Why send a super fast .416 at a DG animal/ Trajectory...??? not at typical Dg ranges where a 100 yd buffalo shot is a loooong one. tell your PH you want to snipe at an elephant, lion, etc from 100+ yds and you'll likely get taken back to the truck PDQ
moderate speed of a heavy bullet is the ticket to DG stopping

I will take the other side. I have 2 weatherby 460's. One is a mark5 and the other is a DGR model. The DGR is a 3" shorter barrel with iron sights, and a removable muzzle brake. It is a little lighter than the mark 5. The DGR is made to order, so you won't see alot of them setting around in stock. I enjoy shooting both of them. The DGR is a little quicker and handier. The newer,(last 8 or 9 years) factory loads are 500 grain bullets at 2600ft/sec. The older loads were 2700ft/sec. Weatherby loaded them down a little because of complaints from African hunters. During extreme heat, pressure built up and some brass was sticking during extraction. Most people either love weatherbys, or hate them, not much middle ground. They are expensive, but I find them to be very accurate and durable. Granted the power is overkill but... who cares? Just my opinion.

Cost is going to be a big factor.

I reckon with the various forums you will see very few people with rifles costing more than the Wby Accumark or the Ruger in 375 and 416. The Wby DGR is quite a bit more expensive and if in calibres such as 378 Wby, 416 Wby or 460 Wby ammo and/or componet costs are much higher than is the case for calibres such as the 375 H&H and 458 Win/Lott.

If popularity of a rifle on the forums (or elsewhere ;D) was an indicator of quality etc then the H&H and Purdey rifles along with custom rifles from d'Arcy Echols and David Miller would rank as junk ;D
